2 Mysterious Alaska Airlines MVP Gold Guest Upgrades & 24-Hour Gift Certificate Wait Period

Good morning everyone.  Yesterday, there was a lot of excitement around Virgin America and Alaska Airlines, so I was looking around my Alaska Airlines account for more info.  I checked my Alaska Airlines account and saw a new link called Thank You Gift listed under the Mileage Plan header.  I didn’t notice this section before, but it says I have 2 MVP Gold Guest Upgrade codes available.  The codes expire on December 31, 2016, and I cannot use them, so they are available here on a first come, first use basis.

The strange thing is that there is a link that goes to the guest upgrades section, but there is nothing listed in the guest upgrades section.

See!  There is nothing listed in my guest upgrades section.  That makes me wonder if the 2 MVP Gold Guest Upgrade codes are even real.  If you can use the codes, please let me know if they are real.

In other news, I needed to buy a $200 Alaska Airlines gift certificate, but I found out that the gift certificates are not valid right away.  You have to wait a full 24 hours to use them.  To purchase an Alaska Airlines gift certificate, click the Gift Certificates link in the Alaska Airlines website footer.

Fill out the gift certificate form and select email delivery.  I skipped over the next few steps about signing into your Alaska Airlines account and paying with a credit card.

You will then receive separate emails for the gift certificate code and the PIN.

You can view the gift certificate balance online, but it will tell you that the gift certificate is not valid until 24 hours after it was purchased.  This is really annoying when you want to buy an Alaska Airlines ticket right away.

After you wait the necessary 24 hours, you can go through the booking process and click the “Use certificate or gift cards” box on the payment screen.

You can enter up to 4 gift certificate codes and PINs to pay for your ticket.  If you have several Alaska Airlines gift certificates, you can book and pay for 2 one way flights, that way you can redeem all of your gift certificates.  Gift certificates are transferrable and can be used to purchase tickets for other people.  According to the terms and conditions:

Alaska Airlines gift certificates must be redeemed online at alaskaair.com® towards the purchase of eligible travel on flights operated by Alaska Airlines, Horizon Air, Penair between Anchorage and Dutch Harbor, and SkyWest Flight Series 3300 – 3499.

Confirm that the gift certificate amount is correct and then pay the remaining balance with a credit card.

After the ticket is booked, you can view the payment summary and see that the gift certificate balance was applied to the ticket.

Lastly, you can check the current balance of your gift certificate and make sure it is $0.00.

I get invalid code error on both codes (my fare is eligible and F seat available at the time). I assumed these were already claimed… but if so, I would imagine that person would leave a thank you note so others won’t keep trying them…

Interesting. I looked earlier this month and had no thank you gifts but now they are there and also expire 12/31 of this year. I wonder if the meant to make them for 2017 or really just giving a few weeks to use.

I’m not sure why AS sent me the codes. I have no elite status and barely flew AS this year. I wonder if they will change to 12/31/2017.

Interesting thing – I have two in the thank you gift area – plus I have six new in their normal location in the ‘valid’ link – interesting thing – the two in the gift area expire 12/31/16 and two in the valid expire 12/31/16 and the expiring all have different codes…

I had these too Grant. Tried to use them and it wouldn’t apply. I then called them up and they said they were for REFERENCE ONLY and I had used mine already on a trip to Maui.
