Hilton Ascend Credit Card: Unlink Citi Card; Set up AMEX Card; View AMEX Offers; Call for Retention Offers

Good afternoon everyone.  Today is the day Citi Hilton Honors Reserve Credit Cards are officially converted to American Express Hilton Honors Ascend Credit Cards.  I logged into my Citi online account and noticed that my 2 Citi Hilton Honors Reserve Credit Cards are missing from my account.  The only remnant of their existence is the last 4 digits of the credit card number and links to unlink the credit cards.  A few days ago, I wrote a post on how to remove / unlink Citi credit cards, so check that out if you have any questions.

I then went through the process of setting up both of my American Express Hilton Honors Ascend Credit Cards.  I was able to add both of those credit cards to my American Express online account and there were several AMEX Offers available too.  I also called American Express to inquire about upgrade options to the American Express Hilton Honors Aspire Credit Card and asked about retention offers.  All that info is below, so let’s get started!

To add your American Express Hilton Honors Ascend Credit Card to your American Express online account, click here to confirm your card. Previously when I tried to do this, I got the following error telling me to try again on January 30.

Then log into your American Express online account.  After that, enter your email address and phone number.

You can then set up email or text alerts, enable paperless statements, and update your income and total asset details.

You can then enroll in Shoprunner, which is a free 2 day shipping option similar to Amazon Prime that works on several other sites.  If you do not want to enroll in Shoprunner, you can skip that option.

Congratulations, you have successfully added your new American Express Hilton Honors Ascend Credit Card to your American Express online account.  There is also a refer a friend option where you can get 20,000 bonus Hilton Honors Points per referral, up to a total of 80,000 bonus Hilton Honors Points.  If you want a referral, please leave a comment below and I will email you directly.

If you had recent activity on your old Citi Hilton Honors Reserve Credit Card, you should see that now on your converted American Express Hilton Honors Ascend Credit Card.  It looks like purchases made in the last 2-3 days are not showing up yet.  If you continue scrolling down, you will see a ton of AMEX Offers (none of which are good for me, but they are there).

After setting up both of my American Express Hilton Honors Ascend Credit Cards, I called American Express and asked about upgrade options to the American Express Hilton Honors Aspire Credit Card.  The rep said that I could upgrade after my first statement closed.  I didn’t get a chance to ask about an upgrade bonus, so I will have to report back later.  Most likely, I will just apply directly for the American Express Hilton Honors Aspire Credit Card.  I then asked for retention offers (based on my hunch that American Express would have decent retention offers), but the rep did not have any retention offers and had no problem closing my credit card if I no longer wanted it.  That seemed strange to me.

So there you have it, the end of a (Citi) era and the beginning of the next (American Express) era.  If you have any questions about adding your new American Express Hilton Honors Ascend Credit Card to your American Express online account, please leave a comment below.  Have a great day everyone!

Hi Grant, Thanks for the post. This conversion affects a lot of people including me, so it is useful and timely. Do you know what is the 5/24 impact of the conversion to Amex? If Chase would “count” these as “new” cards for purposes of 5/24, would not activating them offer any benefit? I too am interested in the Aspire, so look forward to your experiences on conversion options. Thanks.

I’m not sure what the 5/24 implications are (I am way over 5/24 and will probably never be below 5/24 again). As far as I know, 5/24 is only tracking credit inquiries. Since you are not applying for a new credit card, there should be no new credit inquiry, so it should not affect your 5/24 score.

5/24 involves any consumer (or Cap1 biz) account opened in the past 24 months (even if later closed) as well as any accounts to which the applicant has been added as an AU (though those can sometimes be discussed during recon). Inquiries are a different beast and seem to mainly concern BoA and USB.

Well, another PITA converstion. One of my cards gives me errors online when I try to activate. Called in and was told they were still in the process of converting this one and to try again in a couple of hours. Then they basically hung up on me.

The other activated just fine but there is no Hilton account number associated with the card. Given the hassles with the phone calls I’d just done I tried chat for this one, and was told they had submitted the change. No idea how long it will take to resolve.

    So 0/2 for me.
