Nationwide Visa Buxx Card Program Shutting Down February 28 (Last Day to Load is January 31)

Good evening everyone, I wish I had better news to share, but I am very sad to let you know that today it was announced that the Nationwide Visa Buxx Card program is shutting down on February 28, 2017 (according to the announcement on their homepage).  You will still be able to reload your Visa Buxx Cards until January 31, 2017, which gives you time for 3 more weekly reloads before the reload deadline.  If you have not spent down the balance on your cards before February 28, the funds will be refunded back to your funding credit card (this refund would void the miles, points, or cash back you would have earned), so you should spend down the balance on your cards before February 28.

This shutdown is not totally unexpected, actually, it has been overdue for quite a long time.  I guess Nationwide finally decided that they were tired of being used for pajama MS.  My only question now is… why did they pick the below image?  Why are both women smiling and looking out the window?  Is Nationwide going to introduce a new product that is superior to the Visa Buxx Card?  It’s unlikely, but it could happen.

In more serious news, how will I teach my 4 teenage sons financial responsibility?  In case you were wondering, I adopted quadruplets a few years ago and to keep things simple, I named them all after myself.

I remember it like it was yesterday… getting my first Nationwide Visa Buxx card, the sweet smell of the plastic, the easy online reloads, and the points, so many points, week after week, month after month.  Dear friend, you will be sincerely missed.

RIP Nationwide Visa Buxx Cards (April 10, 2015 – February 28, 2017).  If you would like to say your goodbye, please leave a comment below.  Good night everyone :(

Annnnd wouldn’t you know it: this was also the day I got my new Nationwide Visa that earns 1% cash back (but more importantly loads Buxx fee-free AND has a 0% APR). I had visions of many months of loans (er, loads) at no cost. Logged in to add my new card number and…hello popup notice.

But it’s more fun if I start with what happened exactly 24 hours ago when my Buxx cards were scheduled to auto-load. I got emails saying the charges were declined. I went to see what could possibly be up with my Arrival+, and I discovered that it was CLOSED…along with my Aviator Silver. Ah, never a boring game, this hobby!

well damnit, i JUST ordered all new cards bc i somehow missplaced mine :(. i suppose we could have seen this coming since they stopped selling new ones back in August. thanks for the heads up Grant!!

btw, this is a huge coincidence…as i happen to have 4 quadruplets as well, one that I named after myself (because I can’t have too many other Whitney’s running around) and three that I named after my mom, lol.

Thanks for the update Grant. Is there any alternative to the Buxx card remaining following the demise of Serve, Redbird and AMEX for Target?

I believe some credit unions have prepaid reloadable debit cards that you can load with a credit card. The only problem is finding credit unions that offer these cards and being eligible for those credit unions.
