PSA: Renew your TSA PreCheck, Global Entry, NEXUS or SENTRI Membership Early

Quick question, do you know when your Global Entry card expires?  A few months ago, I realized I hadn’t checked to see when mine expired. I’ve had it for years and yet couldn’t actually say for sure. So I took a look. Yikes, it expires in 2017! And as the idea of Global Entry has caught on, the numbers of people applying to the program has ballooned, and the turnaround time in getting both the new and renewed cards was SLOW! So I got on the ball and started the renewal process for my Global Entry card. You can renew your current card up to 1 year in advance, so it is best not to wait too long.

Luckily, the Global Entry program has a helpful step-by-step guide for renewing your membership:

  • Log onto GOES (click here).
  • Select Manage membership – the Trusted Traveler Program Enrollment page will display.
  • Select the blue Renew Application button – the Personal Information page will display.
  • Use the Application Wizard to change your personal information by selecting the specific category(ies) hyperlinks.
  • When complete, select U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Trusted Traveler Program List on the Application Wizard – the Trusted Traveler Program List will display.
  • Click the box next to each program that you wish to renew.
  • Select the enrollment center hyperlink to see a list of available enrollment centers.
  • Select Next – the Trusted Traveler Program Application page will display.
  • If a FIX Errors hyperlink displays, you must provide the information requested to proceed.
  • To continue, select Update to go to the Program Application page.
  • On the Program Application page, select Certify at the bottom of the page – the Certification page will display.
  • Answer Yes or No to “Do you certify?”
  • Select Next. The Final Review: Application Shopping Cart will display.
  • Select the box next to Fees. Fees are for application processing and are non-refundable. To agree and proceed, click here. The Home button changes to a Make Payment button.
  • Select Make Payment. The online payment page displays.

If you have NEXUS or SENTRI, the renewal process is somewhat similar:

One important reason for renewing ahead of time is that some people are being required to have an IN PERSON interview, even for renewals. This would take time to set up, and I had my fingers crossed this would not be my situation.

After a few months of waiting and checking the website, my renewal was still in the pending stage.

In lots of ways I’m old school, so I actually called to see if I could get any information. Must have been my lucky day because much to my delight I did get a helpful officer in the border patrol office in Blaine, Washington, who told me that even renewals were taking months, but that I had applied early enough, so to just wait it out.

Just the other day an envelope arrived. YES, I could feel a card inside! And there it was smiling back at me, my renewed Global Entry card. So that’s my Public Service Announcement for today. Have you renewed your card? Has it been a hassle-free experience?

P.S.  The following premium credit cards offer to reimburse the $100 Global Entry charge or renewal fee.  Some cards allow you to claim the $100 benefit once every 4 years and some let you claim the benefit once every 5 years (unfortunately, I don’t know which cards offer which):

  • Citi Prestige World Elite MasterCard
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve Visa Infinite Credit Card
  • JPMorgan Chase Ritz Carlton Visa Infinite Credit Card
  • AMEX Platinum (various flavors of personal and business cards)

A trick to getting multiple $100 Global Entry credits is to add authorized users to an AMEX Business Platinum Charge Card.

I received a notice that my Global Entry is expiring in June. Appears that it expires on your birthday. It’s only been 4 years since I signed up, and by June it will be only 4.5 years. If my platinum card only covers it every 5 years, how can I renew and still receive my credit?

Call your credit card company and ask them when you can use your next $100 Global Entry credit. Hopefully you can charge the fee before your Global Entry membership expires.

So if i get an green authorized user for my new AMEX platinum, I’ll have a GE credit on the main platinum card, plus another GE credit on the green AU card? Any datapoints on this beyond your conversation with a rep?

I should have clarified. I have the amex business platinum card. I added a amex business green AU today, so i’ll see how that shakes out.

Still, any DP’s on the amex business green actually giving TSA precheck credits?

Here it makes it sound like it will work –
        https://www.americanexpress.com/us/content/expedite-your-travel.html
“The benefit is available to (i) Corporate Gold Card Members, (ii) Consumer Platinum Card® Members, Corporate Platinum Card® Members and Business Platinum Card® Members, and (iii) Centurion® Card Members. The benefit is also available to Additional Card Members on eligible Consumer and Business Card accounts. To receive the statement credit, Additional Card Members must charge the application fee to the eligible Additional Card account.”

This makes it sound like it will only work for additional business platinum AU’s, not green AU’s

RENEWAL: I received an email saying that I need to renew Pre-Check this May. However, my Global Entry doesn’t renew for a couple more years. (I had Pre-check for a few years before I got GE). I can’t seem to get a straight answer from dhs.gov. Any suggestions? Thanks!!

I think your Global Entry card has a Trusted Traveler Number. DOes that number differ from your TSA PreCheck number? If it does, I think you can let your TSA PreCheck membership expire and start using your Trusted Traveler Number from your Global Entry card.

HI Corky, Whenever I have a Global Entry question I call the office in Blaine Washington. Here’s the number :(518) 298-7950. Strange but true, someone answers the phone! Hope this helps and you get your TSA/GE question resolved. Thanks for reading!

Hi Barbara, do you have a credit card that will reimburse you the $85 fee for TSA PreCheck? If so, make sure to call the credit card company and ask them when you are eligible to use the benefit (if you’ve used it on that card previously).
