Day Trip: San Salvador Volcano & Restaurant La Pupusa Loka

Good afternoon everyone, I hope you enjoyed reading about the amazing category 1 SPG hotel (3,000 or 4,000 SPG points per night) in San Salvador: Sheraton Presidente San Salvador Hotel.  When we were not eating in the Sheraton club lounge or eating breakfast in the restaurant, we went on a day trip to a local volcano and pupusa restaurant.  The whole tour with admission to the volcano and transportation cost $40 per person.  Lunch was not included, but only cost me ~$7.  We started the tour at our hotel, picked up another person at a nearby hotel, and then drove to the volcano (~30 minute drive).  The volcano is in Parque El Boqueron.  Here is a beautiful painting on a brick wall.

Near the parking lot, there is a platform where you can get a nice view of El Salvador and see 2-3 other volcanoes (depending on the visibility).  You can also see a lake in the distance.  Next to the platform (and where the volcano tour ends) there was a small stand that sells succulents and a local drink (you can spike it too, if you want).  We didn’t buy any succulents or try the local drink.

From the parking lot, we walked about ~100 steps to get to the crater edge.  From there, you can see the entire circumference of the crater and the small volcano opening at the bottom.  Our tour guide said that it takes 4-5 hours to walk all the way around the volcano, but we did not do that tour.  From the peak, you can see 2-3 other volcanoes in the distance.

After the volcano tour, we drove ~10 minutes to Restaurant La Pupusa Loka.  I don’t think I’ve ever had a pupusa before, but I really liked them.  The restaurant offers a great view of San Salvador too.

I ordered a beef and a pork pupusa.  They were very tasty.  Our guide told us to put the tomato sauce and coleslaw-type vegetables on top.  Very tasty.  I ordered a horchata to wash it all down.

Next door, there was a cool restaurant with colorful umbrellas on the ceiling.

Lastly, there is a strange photo op with face cuts that you can pose for and a nice view of San Salvador.  The tour lasted about 4 hours and was really nice.  Our tour guide, Eric, was very knowledgeable on El Salvador and United States history.  We had a great time talking to him about the volcano, delicious food, and life in El Salvador.  I highly recommend the tour.  You can book this and other tours at the Sheraton concierge desk.

If you have any questions, please leave a comment below.  Have a great weekend everyone!
