Do Europe’s Capital Cities Ranked By Cost Match Your Own Experience?

Different cities can be wildly different in how expensive they are when you visit them. That may be stating the obvious, but sometimes the obvious just pops out at you.Whether the cities are in the same country or on the same continent, I notice the price differentials. Having just returned from Copenhagen, and having found it to be an expensive place to spend time, I was wondering how it measured up to other European cities. I visit Europe at least once or twice a year, so I have a subjective sense of cost. After talking with my cousin who lives in Europe about this, she sent me an interesting article to read about the European capital cities and how they ranked from most expensive to cheapest.

I was surprised by some of what I read. I wouldn’t have thought Dublin would rank so high. Same for Lisbon. I don’t choose where I visit based on cost, but still found this a good read. See if your experiences match up. Some of mine do, but not all of them.

I don’t find Dublin to be that expensive but it’s not like Eastern Europe Cheap. I noticed Istanbul isn’t on the list. Istanbul is the cheapest place I’ve been in years. The hotels are cheap in cash and points. We went to the downtown markets and bought an ornate “tourist” tea set for like $10. Went into a small store and bought 2 cokes, cigarettes some snacks and water and it was like $2.50 USD. The vendors on the street would stop us and ask if we are American and then literally BEG us to tell everyone we know to come back and visit. We stayed at a Hilton Garden Inn in a nice area by the airport for 5,000 Hilton points (talk about good value).

Hi Dan, The list is only of capital cities. Thanks so much for the info on Istanbul, though. Does sound like a place to visit, and really inexpensive too.

Count yourselves lucky that you have dollars. I would imagine most Europeans won’t be visiting the States anytime soon if they can avoid it. I’m horrified by how expensive it has become to visit. As far as the list goes – I knew London wouldn’t be cheap – but I don’t think it’s really any different to either Paris or Amsterdam which are above and below. I don’t know how the hotel room figure was worked out. If you plan to drink alcohol the Scandinavian cities take matters in a completely different direction. I’d say this list is a “guestimate”. It is right that Lisbon has become more expensive – it’s now incredibly popular. I was surprised about Dublin’s ranking….

Thanks for your input, Evan. And you are right, it does depend on what a person spends money on as to the overall cost. Hotels, food, alcohol and even coffee prices vary so much.
