Pilot Program Announced: BART Riders to SFO get Access to Priority TSA Security Lines

Share this post

Good afternoon everyone.  I just received an email from BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) about a new pilot program that was just announced for BART passengers traveling to San Francisco International Airport (SFO).  According to the announcement, passengers who take BART to SFO will have access to priority TSA security lines.  This is kind of a goldilocks line between general TSA security lines and TSA PreCheck lines.  I believe the screening process is the same as general TSA security, but with a shorter line.  Since I have TSA PreCheck, I would probably never go through the priority TSA security line, but this is good news for passengers who do not have TSA PreCheck or are heading to SFO for an international flight.

It should be noted that the pilot program is not live right now and no specific timeline has been announced.  I will update this post when the pilot program goes live.  If things go well at SFO, a similar pilot program might go live at Oakland International Airport (OAK).

In my post Get to the SFO Centurion Lounge Like a Pro, I talked about my strategy of taking BART to SFO, going through International Terminal G and then walking to the Centurion Lounge in Terminal 3. Walking from BART to Terminal 3 takes about 5 minutes, to Terminal 2 takes about 10 minutes, and to Terminal 1 takes about 15 minutes.  I’m not sure if you can go from the International Terminal A and Terminal 1.  If you do not want to walk between the terminals, you can take BART to SFO, then go up a level to the SkyTrain which connects all the terminals, parking garages, and rental car area.

BART is not the most glamorous way to get to SFO, but depending on traffic, might be the fastest way to get from SFO to downtown San Francisco (Union Square, Market Street, Embarcadero, Ferry Building, etc).  What do you think about this new pilot program?  Would you use the priority TSA security lines if the pilot program were live today?  Let me know what you think in the comments section.  Have a great day everyone!

    Hi, Grant;
    Have the fires affected you in your part of Sonoma? I’m a bit farther south, in Contra Costa County, but we’re getting a lot of the smoke from that fire. I hope you’re well and safe.

      Yes, but not directly. We packed up some items and drove down to SF for the weekend. Hopefully you are doing fine and the smoke improves over the next few days.
