Work from Home Diary 10: Jigsaw Puzzles Make Me Happy

Updated at 4:40pm PT on 5/3: I finished the last puzzle (1,000 piece Bird Village) and posted the photo at the bottom of the post.

Good afternoon everyone, long time no blog.  I hope you had a great weekend and your week is off to a great start.  I started sharing my thoughts regarding working from home in a series of Work from Home Diary posts.  Feel free to share your work from home feelings in the comments section below.  For today’s update, I wanted to share my obsession with jigsaw puzzles.  When you spend most of the day / week / month inside, there is only so much TV you can watch.

Laura and I received 4 puzzles as Easter gifts so I decided to spend a few hours over the last 2 weeks working on the puzzles.  The first 2 puzzles had 300 pieces and took about 2 hours to finish.  The third puzzle had 500 pieces and took about 3 hours to finish.  I just started the last puzzle which has 1,000 pieces and it should take me 7-10 hours to finish.  I started with the easy 300 piece puzzles and liked the flowers, birds, and butterflies in this puzzle.

I then worked on this 300 piece camera puzzle.  The weathered blue wooden shelf was tricky, but finding the pieces for each camera was easy.

This 500 piece puzzle was fun to work on and reminded me of a relaxing evening.  I started with the book since the words were easy to line up and assemble.  I then moved onto the green wooden door and green bookshelf.  This was probably my favorite puzzle out of the first 3 puzzles.

Lastly, I started this 1,000 piece puzzle last night and I have a challenge on my hands (I took this photo as a panoramic on my iPhone and it turned out very good).  The pieces barely fit on our table and the pieces are so much smaller than the above 300 piece and 500 piece puzzles.  All 4 puzzles are 27 inches wide and 20 inches tall, so the pieces on this last puzzle are much smaller and harder to identify their location in the puzzle.  I like to pick up a single puzzle piece, stare at the image on the box and figure out exactly where the piece belongs.  This is going to be a challenge, for sure…

Challenge completed!  It took about 10-12 hours to complete, but who’s counting?

I love 1,000 piece puzzles, which usually take me a day to finish. I found a set of puzzle trays one day and they are great to use because they stack and the pieces don’t take up so much space on the table. But the way to do the puzzle is not one piece at a time but to gather like kind pieces and do the puzzle in sections.

Puzzle trays, that’s a great idea. Never thought of that before but I have used the top and bottom of the puzzle box lids as trays.

Aa for my strategy, I should have said that I gather are similar pieces (all pieces with parts of the book, or pieces that are bright pink) and try to assembly those pieces together.
