My Online Passport Renewal Only Took 2 Weeks (Full Timeline & Process)

Good afternoon everyone.  Almost a year ago, I received an email reminder from the US Passport Renewal system notifying me that my passport was due to expire in June 2026. Since Madison was born in August 2025 and we didn’t have any international travel planned for the next couple of years, I decided to wait until the expiration date got a little closer before starting the renewal process.  I recently completed the online passport renewal process, and the experience was surprisingly fast and easy (spoiler alert: it only took 2 weeks!)

Getting Started with Online Passport Renewal

To begin the process, I visited the official Travel.State.Gov website and went to the Renew Your Passport Online page to start the process.

Requirements for Online Passport Renewal

You can renew your passport online if you meet all of the following requirements (as of May 2026, copied from the website):

  • The passport you are renewing is (or was) valid for 10 years. It must be expiring within 1 year or have expired less than 5 years ago. Check your passport’s date of issue and expiration.
  • You are age 25 or older.
  • You are not changing your personal information such as your name or sex.
  • You are not traveling for at least 6 weeks from the date you will submit your application. We only offer routine service.
  • You are located in a U.S. state or territory at the time you submit your application.
  • Do not use your most recent passport after you renew it. We will cancel it so you cannot use it for international travel.
  • You have your passport with you, it is not damaged or mutilated, and you have not reported it as lost or stolen.
  • If you do not qualify to renew online, you may be able to renew by mail or in person at a passport agency or center.

What Items Are Need

Before starting the process, make sure you have the following items ready (as of May 2026, copied from the website):

  • The passport(s) you are renewing
  • Your credit or debit card for passport fees
    • Passport book: $130
    • Passport card: $30
    • Passport book and card: $160
    • 1-3 day delivery (optional): $22.05
  • A digital passport photo
  • Important personal details like your social security number and emergency contact
  • We will cancel the passport you are renewing after you submit your application. You cannot use it for international travel.
  • Do not mail us the passport you are renewing. Keep it.
  • You can only renew the current type of passport(s) you have now. If you want to request a document that you don’t already have, you must renew your passport by mail.

Getting a Digital Passport Photo

About a year ago, Laura needed a digital passport photo for another purpose, so I decided to get mine taken at the same time at Staples since I already knew my passport would expire in 2026.  Looking back, it’s probably pretty easy to take your own passport photo at home using a plain white background, as long as you follow the official requirements regarding lighting, facial expression, and image quality.

My Online Passport Renewal Timeline

April 23: I Submitted the Application

I submitted the online passport renewal application and the process was very straightforward:

  • Fill out the application online
  • Upload a digital passport photo
  • Pay the fees with a credit card

After submitting everything, I received a confirmation email showing the $160 total cost for my passport and passport card, along with an estimated delivery date of June 10.

May 3: Application Status In Process

About 10 days later, I received an email confirming that my application was officially being processed.

May 5: Passport and Passport Card Approved

Just two days after that, I received another email saying my application had been approved and that my new passport and passport card were being produced and shipped with an estimated delivery date of May 11.  Honestly, I was shocked by how quickly everything moved. During the first few years of the pandemic, I remember hearing stories about passport renewals taking 10-12 weeks, so I was expecting a similarly long wait time.

May 7: New Passport Arrived

My new passport arrived via USPS Priority Mail on May 7, which was 2 weeks after I submitted the application on April 23.  I didn’t even pay for expedited service.  Of course, processing times can vary depending on demand and time of year, so don’t expect a 2 week turnaround time for all passport renewals.

First Impressions of the New Passport Design

The updated passport design was immediately noticeable, especially the new profile page. Compared to my old passport issued in 2016, the new passport issued in 2026 feels significantly more modern and durable. The biggest improvement is the thicker plastic profile page, which replaced the older laminated profile page. The updated passport also includes enhanced security features and an embedded chip that supports automated passport control systems at select airports.

Additional Interior Passport Photos

I also took photos of several interior pages showing the updated security features, travel information, and updated artwork.

Passport Card Arrival

Two days later, on May 9, my passport card arrived separately via USPS First Class Mail. The passport card is optional and costs an additional $30. While the passport card cannot be used for international air travel, I occasionally carry it as a secondary government-issued ID while traveling abroad because it’s smaller and easier to keep in my wallet.

Here is a closer look at the passport card:

Here is the protective sleeve that they sent me with my passport card. I put the passport card inside the sleeve for safekeeping.

Trouble Updating my Global Entry Account

The only issue I encountered came when I tried updating my new passport information in my Global Entry account. After logging into Global Entry, I clicked on the Update Documents link.

Then I clicked the Edit button for the passport section.

Then I entered my new passport details and clicked the Submit button.

Even though I entered all the information correctly, I repeatedly received an error message saying the passport information could not be verified.  After doing some research online, I found a Reddit thread where several other people reported the exact same issue shortly after renewing their passports. The general advice was to wait a week or two and try again later.  This may be a temporary synchronization issue between the passport and CBP / Global Entry systems. I plan to try again in the next few days and will update this post if the issue resolves itself.

Standard Passport vs. Large Passport

When I renewed my passport last time in 2016, I selected the large passport with 52 pages.  This time, I decided to go with the 28 page standard passport since I probably won’t travel internationally quite as heavily over the next decade. If my travel habits change, I can always renew early in the future if needed. Laura’s passport remains valid through 2029, so we won’t need to renew hers for a while. We may also consider getting Madison her first passport within the next few years if we decide to take an international trip together.

Looking Ahead to Future International Travel

Even though I don’t currently have any international trips planned, it still feels great to have a brand new passport with a full 10 years remaining before expiration.  I’m especially hoping to take Madison to Europe someday since Laura has relatives in Malta. I’m really looking forward to introducing her to international travel, and hopefully she’ll enjoy international business class flights as much as I do!

Why Don’t Travel Rewards Credit Cards Cover Passport Fees?

One thing I found interesting is that many travel rewards credit cards reimburse the application fees for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, but I could not find any credit cards that reimburse passport application or renewal fees.  That feels like a missed opportunity, especially considering passports are typically renewed only once every 10 years compared to every 4-5 years for programs like Global Entry or TSA PreCheck.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I was extremely impressed with how easy the online passport renewal process was. There were no paper forms to print, no checks to mail, and no need to send in my old passport. Everything was handled digitally, and the turnaround time was much faster than I expected.  If you qualify for online passport renewal, I would absolutely recommend using it.  I would also recommend saving a digital copy of your passport photo and confirmation emails for future reference.

If you recently renewed your passport online, I would love to hear how long the process took for you. If you have any questions about the online passport renewal process, please leave a comment below.  Have a great day everyone and safe travels!

Extremely valid re credit cards covering passport fees. I’ve never thought of that but great idea.

Thank you, I just need to get the word out to the big credit card issuers that people pay for passport fees and passport renewal fees.

Interesting, I applied for my online renewal the day after you did, but mine isn’t arriving until today. Still faster than their “official” estimate though, and it was an easy process. I took the photo myself at home. I’ll also second that it would be nice as a credit card reward!

I only got the regular passport (with extra pages like you did, though I realized that with so many places no longer doing stamps, I probably didn’t need to)

Yes that’s especially true in Europe. When we flew from Ireland to Finland 2 summers ago, I believe we did get passport stamps but that is a rare exception.

I had the same, quick experience and surprise recently. Thank you for mentioning Global Entry, I had not thought about updating that! I did think about updating airline accounts that I normally fly internationally, but I have not done it.

If your passport is expiring in the next few months, you will most likely be alerted when you’re booking airline tickets that your passport is out of date or worst case scenario you can update it when it’s time to check in for your flight. Let me know if your Global Entry update works the first time.
