Don’t live near LAX? No problem.
I am assuming you read my previous post on how to get 2 Round Trips Tickets to Hawaii for $105. If not, go read that first before reading this post. If you want to get to Hawaii and you don’t live near LAX, there are a few workarounds for your situation.
Option 1: Fly to LAX on a Paid Ticket
Depending on where you live and the time of year, flights can be relatively cheap or extremely expensive. I would recommend purchasing tickets far in the future and travelling during slower times of the year. The below screenshots come from ITA Matrix.
$138 Round Trip from Northern California (San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, and Sacramento) is pretty cheap during August and September.
$158 Round Trip from Texas (Dallas, Austin, and Houston) is pretty cheap during August and September.
$228 Round Trip from Florida (Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, and Tampa) is affordable during August and September.
$293 Round Trip from the Northeast (New York City, Boston, and Philadelphia) is affordable during August and September.
I would also recommend flying Southwest Airlines and signing up for their promotional emails. Sometimes Southwest has much cheaper prices than United, US Airways, American, and Delta, but their prices do not show up in ITA Matrix.
Here are the updated prices for 2 round trip tickets to Hawaii:
- $190 per person for Northern California: $105 + (2 x $138) = $381 or $190 per person
- $210 per person for Texas: $105 + (2 x $158) = $421 or $210 per person
- $280 per person for Florida: $105 + (2 x $228) = $561 or $280 per person
- $345 per person for the Northeast: $105 + (2 x $293) = $691 or $345 per person
Option 2: Using British Airways Avios to get to LAX

If you don’t live within 650 miles of LAX, I would highly recommend buying round trip airfare to LAX. If you want to spend the least amount of money, you can only get 1 round trip flight to Hawaii for $100 ($95 annual fee plus $5 taxes/fees) with British Airways Avios.
Some (good and bad) options to get more British Airways Avios:
- You can also earn Avios by using your Chase British Airways Visa card. Each dollar you spend will earn 1.25 Avios. Every $800 you charge on the card will get you 1,000 Avios. This is a very costly way to get extra Avios and it is most likely a TERRIBLE deal as well.
- Transfer American Express Membership Reward Points into British Airways Avios through June 7, 2013 and receive a 35% transfer bonus. This is the BEST deal right now.
- Transfer Chase Ultimate Reward Points instantly to British Airways Avios. This is a GOOD deal.
How to Transfer Chase Ultimate Reward Points into British Airways Avios
Log into your Chase account and go to Ultimate Rewards. You need to have a Chase Sapphire Preferred, Chase Ink Bold, or Chase Ink Plus card to be able to transfer your Ultimate Reward Points. To sign up for any of these cards, please go to my Travel Credit Cards page.
Under the Point Transfer tab, click British Airways Executive Club.
Enter the number of Ultimate Reward Points you want to transfer in the box (you can only transfer in increments of 1,000). Enter your British Airways Account number, and you first and last name. Click the green Transfer Points button.
Confirm the number of miles, your British Airways account number, and your first and last name. Click the green Transfer Points button.
Within seconds, the transfer should be complete. Log out and log back in to your British Airways. Click the Manage my Account link on the left column.
Click the My Statement link.
You should see your latest Chase Ultimate Rewards Point transfer.
