Hyatt’s Fall 5,000 Point Promo Earns Me the Southwest Companion Pass
A few weeks ago I wrote Targeted: 5,000 Bonus Hyatt Gold Passport Points After Spending $3,000 in 3 Months. Today, I share my journey. I received the following email (and a similar letter) from Hyatt regarding my Chase Hyatt Credit Card.
Spending $3,000 in 3 months is a piece of cake to earn 5,000 bonus Hyatt points. My credit card statement closed a few days ago and I was glad the bonus points posted in the same time period, not the 6-8 week time window the terms stated. Since I recently downgraded my Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card to the Sapphire basic card, I have been using my Hyatt card more for international restaurant purchases and making airline reservations.
According to Hyatt’s point earning structure, you should only earn 2x points on airline tickets purchased directly from the airline. I purchased one ticket on AirTran.com and another ticket on Expedia (flying from Mexico City to Easter Island for $522 – Thanks TheFlightDeal).
I logged into my Hyatt account and was glad all the points posted.
I logged into my Southwest Airlines account and checked my Companion Pass status (bookmark this link for the Companion Pass if you cannot find it in your account). I was 23,289 SWA miles away from reaching Companion Pass status.
Hyatt points convert to Southwest Points at a 5 : 2.4 ratio. If you convert 50,000 Hyatt points at once, you will receive a 6,000 point bonus and receive a total of 30,000 Southwest Airline miles (a 5 : 3 ratio).
At the time, I was 30,500 Hyatt points away from having the necessary 50,000 Hyatt points, so I logged into my Chase Ultimate Rewards account and converted 31,000 Chase Ultimate Reward Points to 31,000 Hyatt Points.
Chase Ultimate Reward Points get deducted and transferred to Hyatt instantly. Just log out and log back into your Hyatt account to see your new point total.
I love instant point deposits into Hyatt.
Back at the points to mile converter, select Southwest Airlines from the top drop down menu, enter your Southwest Airlines account number, and select 50,000 points from the second drop down box. Make sure you are converting 50,000 Hyatt points into 30,000 Southwest Airline miles.
As soon as you hit submit, the Hyatt points are gone and being converted to Southwest Airline miles.
I also received a confirmation email stating that the points could take 4-6 weeks, but I highly doubt that. Earlier this summer, I converted a ton of Choice Hotel Points to Southwest Airline Miles (Choice Hotel Privileges Points take 8 Days to Transfer to Southwest Airlines) and was glad that the transfer only took 8 days, so I am expecting a similar time period this time.
As for my current Hyatt account balance, there is not much I can get for 278 Hyatt points. The Hyatt points are immediately deducted from your Hyatt account balance.
I will post an update as soon as the points show up in my Southwest Airlines account. Companion pass here I come. Now all I need now is a travelling companion…
Maybe my next challenge will be this: Targeted: 3,000 Bonus Southwest Airlines Rapid Reward Points After Spending $5,000 in 3 Months.

Hi Grant-
Great stuff as usual. For some reason I was under the impression that transferring points in from another program would not count towards the companion pass. Is that not the case? Thanks!
The only thing that doesn’t count is direct transfers from Chase to Southwest.
Great going buddy!!!
For some reason, I was under the impression that you wouldn’t be able to acquire your SWA companion pass this year, based on previous discussions we had on that issue. Evidently, you found a way through! Maybe it was that you were going to have to get the companion pass in this calender year instead of in January for the full 24 month run?
Well I got the SWA credit card in August 2013 and I had transfers a ton of Choice Points to Southwest Airlines. If I waited until January, I would have 0 SWA companion pass qualifying miles.
Does that mean, you loose all your companion pass qualifying miles at the end of the year if you do not hit the 110K points required to get the companion pass?
Yes, every January 1, your Companion Pass qualifying SWA points balance is reset to 0.
