My Christmas Thoughts on Travel Hacking

My Christmas Thoughts on Travel Hacking

Merry Christmas and happy holidays everyone!  I apologize if my previous post put a damper to your holiday spirit.  I guess I could have waited until New Years Eve or New Years Day to post my 2014 predictions, but I am not very patient and hate waiting (which is why I am difficult to buy Christmas/birthday gifts for).  Anyways, after spending the evening with my extended family, I realized how lucky us “travel hackers” are.  We go on our fair share of trips and pay a fraction of the “normal” cost.  Some people (mainly friends, relatives, and complete strangers) have a hard time believing that travel can be a lot cheaper and more relaxing than they think.

I might even say that helping a friend, a friend of a friend, or a family member book a “once-in-a-life-time” trip is even more rewarding than booking the same trip for myself.  To me, I see “travel hacking” as a big game: us vs. the airline/hotel/rental car/credit card industry.  We brag about getting the most miles for the cheapest price, how the wine selection in one lounge is better than another, or how business class is unbearable compared to first class.  To most people, the bigger game is how to get from point A to point B without spending so much money that we can’t afford presents for our family.   Continue reading

How are Merchants Classified? Use the Visa Supplier Locator to Find Out!

Do you have a Chase Freedom, Citi Dividend, or Discover It credit card?  Are you aware of the rotating categories that change every month?  Do you know what is considered a “department store,” “gas station,” or “drug store”?  In order to get the 5% cash back spending bonus, it is important to know what stores qualify.  Here’s how…

Go to the Visa Supplier Locator website now.

Start by searching for the name of a merchant and your zip code.  In this case, I type CVS into the supplier name and enter my zip code.  Leave everything else the same and click search.

Now it will search for CVS near zip code 12345.  The first 5 results are for CVS stores and they are all classified as “DRUG STORES – 5912”.

All 5 CVS Stores

Now click the REFINE / START A NEW SEARCH link at the top of the page.  Remove CVS from the Supplier Name box and select “5912 – DRUG STORES & PHARMACIES” from the MCC list, then click search.

5912 Drug Stores

Here is the new list of merchants with the 5912 merchant code.  You should see CVS along with other merchants with the same merchant code.

Merchants other than CVS with merchant code 5912.

The Visa Supplier Locator only tells you how Visa categorizes the merchant.  MasterCard, Discover, and American Express may use the same classification or the may use a slightly different merchant code.  I would say that they are about 95% the same, but your mileage may vary.  If you have any questions, please leave a comment below.

My New Chase Freedom Visa Signature came with Chase Blink (Visa PayWave NFC Chip)

First off, it appears that there is a Chase Freedom Visa credit card (like the one shown above) and then there is a Chase Freedom Visa Signature credit card.  I received the Visa Signature card and it is really reflective, not the flat light blue from the picture above.

Anyways, when I was looking at the back of the card, I noticed the sideways WiFi signals and asked the Chase rep on the phone about it.  He said it was Chase Blink.  What the heck is Chase Blink?

A quick Google search lead me to this page, where it says very little about Chase Blink.
