$10,000 Monthly Bill Pay Limit

This morning I was trying to pay some bills with my Serve Card, but kept getting this error message “That payment amount exceeds your monthly limit.  Please lower your payment amount and try again.”  I’ve never seen that message before so I was confused.  Let me try a bank transfer instead…

Serve Monthly Limit Bill Pay

Nope, that didn’t work either.  I was out of options, so I decided to call Serve and see what was going on.

Serve Monthly Limit Withdraw Funds

After a few minutes on hold, the customer service rep informed me that I was almost at my monthly bill payment limit of $10,000.  She added up all my bill payments from the beginning of the month until today and said I had already sent $9,981.50 this month.  I could only send another $19.50 this month.  That was a bummer, but I was told that the monthly limit resets on the first of every month, so I guess I have to wait a few days to do some bill payments.

$10000 Bill Pay Per Month Serve

Most Serve Card users will probably not reach this limit, but this is just an interesting point to keep in mind if you do several thousand dollars in bill payments in one month.

Grant — Do you know if there is a limit on how much can be payed to one payee at a time. For example, say I loaded up my 5K limit, could I just send the 5K directly to my SPG amex without raising any red flags? Or should I break it up into smaller chunks?

I don’t know the secret formula to avoid getting into trouble with Bluebird, but I would probably split the $5,000 into 2 or 3 bill payments to different vendors.

Today I run into this issue.
Serve has payment limit of $15000 per month out of which $5000 limit is for non-registered payments. non-registered defined as the one where they have to send payment by check.
You get this error message, If you exceed limit of $15000 for electronic or $5000 for check payment.

    Hey Grant,

Have you encountered any issues withdrawing too much money from serve to external bank account? If so what are the limits?

Okay I initiated a 3500 transfer from serve to external and some other people were saying to keep it below 2000 because they might flag the account

I don’t know what limit is safe. I think $2000 and $3500 are both safe. It might depend how much you have left in you account after you do an external transfer or how quickly you are unloading the funds after you loaded the funds.

Hi Grant, Just wanted to say thanks for your post. I Googled the error message and your post was the only one relevant to this problem. I was trying to pay a large bill ($6000) to a contractor using Serve, and got the error message you listed above (“That payment amount exceeds your monthly limit. Please lower your payment amount and try again.”) I figured out that I was paying a company (unregistered) so the limit was $5,000. I tried $5,000 and got the same error message. I realized that I had sent a Serve check to a different service provider (also unregistered) earlier, so had to account for that amount in my $5,000 limit. I was then able to schedule a check – which I sent to myself this time. I’ll send another check to myself for the remaining balance on Dec. 1st, when you say the limits reset, and then give both checks to my contractor. Thanks again! And you might consider making the $5,000 limit for mailed checks to unregistered users more prominent. BTW, if anyone is looking, here is the link to the Serve legal agreements: https://www.americanexpress.com/serve/legal/ (the $5,000 limit is mentioned under 3.h. “Please note:….Payments via the Pay Bills Service to Payees that are not listed on the pre-populated list displayed online at the Serve Site or via the Serve Mobile Application are limited, in the aggregate to all such Payees, to $5,000 per calendar month, including Mail a Check payments.”
