Random News: AMEX Offers for Courtyard Marriott, Lucille’s BBQ, Whole Foods, and JC Penneys; up to 1,000 Bonus Southwest Airlines Shopping Portal Bonus Points; and New Office Depot / Office Max Rewards Program for 2015
Good evening everyone, what a long day it has been. I woke up at 4am so I could get to Oakland Airport and catch my 6:15am flight back to Orange County on Southwest Airlines. I am happy to report that my first use of my Southwest Companion Pass (since last November) went smoothly. The only hick-up was when I checked in for my flight, I had TSA Pre Check both ways, but my companion only had it on the outbound flight. It wasn’t too bad, I breezed thru TSA security and only had to wait for her for 10 minutes :)
My buddy Greg (aka Frequent Miler) was able to buy a physical gift card at his local Courtyard Marriott and receive the $20 statement credit (link).
Here are some other offers that caught my attention (and my appetite):
This is a few days old, but thought I would share it anyway. If you have any online shopping to do, you may be interested in earning bonus Southwest Airlines points. For more details, click here.
Last but not least, two of my favorite office supply stores are merging. Office Depot and Office Max will now be the new American Airlines Office Depot. They are changing their rewards programs, so those of you who buy stuff that aren’t gift cards might be interested in reading about the changes here.
Posts in the pipeline:
- Chase Southwest Airlines Premier Credit Card retention bonus call (hopefully tomorrow morning)
- Updated Shopkick App (with screenshots)
- Summary of the results of my downgradeable and convertible credit card post
- Reminder for my OC Meetup this Saturday night at In-N-Out (same place, same time, same Travel with Grant t-shirt)

Did you sign up for the Amex sync offer at Best Buy? I always get excited when I can get money back at a place that sells visa gift cards…
The local Best Buys near me didn’t have Visa gift cards, just lame Best Buy and iTunes gift cards :(
its been 2 wks or so now but the best buy on jamboree (market place) had $200 VGC’s …. they had to go in the back and get them though (they opened a new pack of happy birthday visa GC’s..) . i remember teh 2 guys who helped me, brandon and bertin, maybe you could call and ask?
Ok I can do that in the morning. Thanks for the tip Alex. I’ll let you know how it goes. Good night!
I bought five $200 visa gift cards and asked the cashier to let me pay $250 on each of four amex cards (plus a little extra on one to pay the 5.95 gift card fees).
Thank you Chris, I will give it a try this week sometime. I just need to figure out which credit card the offer is tied to.
I ended up buying 5 gc’s and splitting them among four amexes ($250 each)….. Hope it works out !
Excellent, I’ll try that this weekend.
You should also be able to get some best buy rewards if you are signed up for their rewards program.
I’m not a fan of Best Buy. I can find everything on Amazon cheaper.
The $1k gc’s yielded a $20 gift card which they emailed to me within 2-3 weeks (just got it yesterday ) . I gave them my phone # which was connected to my rewards zone or whatever Membershup. So even tho I never buy anything at bestbuy it was a nice bonus. At least I can get some discount off whatever next overpriced ps4 game I buy ;)
I only have the offer on 2 of my AMEX Cards (Platinum and PRG). It seems like all my MR cards have the same offers.
If you do Amex Sync twitter #amexbestbuy, as long as they still have the promo available it should be added to your cards. There is a great website http://wandr.me/Account/LogOn?ReturnUrl=%2fSyncAssist%2f that will basically automatically sync amex offers to your account whenever they come up
I’m signed up for Seth’s Twitter sync tool, it does a great job.
i also recently found out that authorized users (if they make their own online Amex account) can get their own sync offers too. you have to set up twitter separately for each one (and sync assist them, or manually tweet using the account) but they can all get their own sync offers. serve too (as im sure most of you already knew). pretty awesome.
I don’t do much with AMEX Sync, AMEX offers for you are easier to manage for me.

Grant, I signed up for Amex offers for Courtyard deal and am spending few nights at Courtyard right now. To my horror, I forgot all my Amex cards in a hurry. Do you think I lost a good chance? Can they still process payments if I can provide the card numbers on a piece of paper?
That seems unlikely. My only suggestion would be to call AMEX and explain the problem. Maybe they can read the credit card number to the front desk. The offer should still be around for a few more weeks. Any chance you have any other Marriott stays planned in the near future?
Thanks! That is a good idea. Initially, I planned to use 4-5 amex cards for a bill of $600 stay. If I call up Amex for each card then it may take a while at the front desk to approve for those cards. I will give it a shot though. Unfortunately, I don’t have further stays planned for rest of the year!
Can someone mail the cards to you really quickly?
OK. It doesn’t work to not swipe the card and still pay. So front desk advised me to have full payment on my desired card. And once I get home, I can fax copies of my Amex cards and have the charge on my original card refunded. Worth the hassle?
I would think so. $20 back for each card is not bad.
