Evolve Money Discover It Payments Earn 1% Cash Back and Other Cash Back Mysteries Solved
About a month ago, I wrote Evolve Money Update and Discover It Cash Back Clarification ($50 Refer a Friend Bonus and 5% Cash Back at Walgreens). This post is an update to that post. Since writing about Discover It’s cash back, my Evolve Money payments have posted to my Discover It statement and cash back has posted to my account. Before I clarify the cash back mysteries, let me show you where I found this information in my Discover account. The first thing you need to do is log into your Discover It online account and click the orange View Statement button.
On your statement page, click the View Details link of the statement you want to view.
This page shows a summary of all your transactions and Detailed Rewards Activity (aka cash back). You can scroll through the activity to see if all your Discover cash back has posted properly (make sure your Shop Discover portal purchases are counted).
These next 2 images are kind of confusing. I tried my best to make them simple, but this is what I created. The top part shows all the monthly transactions from November 6 through December 6. I made 2 Evolve Money payments of $999, totaling $1,998. It looks like those transactions earned 1% cash back since $19.98 cash back shows up in the Everything Else cash back category. Learn more about Evolve Money now accepting Discover It Credit Cards here.
My $55 Kohl’s order also earned cash back (thank you Shop Discover), but it looks like I am missing a few pennies. I should have earned 10% cash back on my $55 purchase, which would be $5.50, not $5.10. I am not going to bother trying to get 40 cents cash back.
For the below image, the top part shows all the monthly transactions from October 6 through November 6. You may remember that all of my 5% cash back Walgreens purchases did not post last statement. I should have earned $50 cash back, but my statement only showed $35.69 cash back. Well, it looks like the missing $14.31 cash back posted to my most recent statement (above).
The second mystery from the above image is around the $75 cash back earned from Online Shopping and Department Stores. I believe my Gift Card Mall (GCM) order from October 7 earned me cash back on my recent order, since $1,500 x 5% cash back = $75 cash back.
Throughout the last 2 months, I have used the Shop Discover online portal to make a few online purchases. I used other credit cards besides my Discover It Credit Card which is why you see Shop Discover cash back with no accompanying Discover It purchase.
If you have any questions, please leave a comment below. Have a great day everyone!
Does that mean you received shopdiscover credit even when not using discover card?
Yes, exactly. All the Shop Discover cash back (besides Kohl’s) was earned by using a different credit card.
Thats very good to know. Also, I understand you got your cashback for GCM purchase 1 statement late. Did you have to call and ask for it? I have a similar situation with an online purchase from HP.
I did not call to ask for the cash back, it posted automatically the following statement. Not sure why some cash back posted the first statement and some posted the second statement.
is it possible that you only earned cash back on the pretax amount of your purchase?
You’re probably right. Looking at my Kohl’s Order:
Subtotal $59.97
THANKS15 -$9.00
Shipping FREE
Sales Tax $4.08
Total $55.05
My order total before tax was $50.97, which explains the $5.10 cash back. I’m surprised Discover / Kohl’s doesn’t pay cash back on tax.
hey Grant, do you think ordering VGC from SM.com qualifies as online shopping for %5 cash back ?
I have no idea. You have a 50/50 shot at the order counting as an online purchase.
I’m curious about why you do odd amounts like $100 and $300 when buying PPMC cards? Assuming thats what you bought at Wags.
I use $200 Visa GCs from Staples to pay for some of the PPMCCs. I know, I’m weird.
May I ask what you paid for at Evolve for $999?
I paid my PayPal Extras MasterCard bill, which is linked to my PayPal account.
Sorry, still confused. What are buying on PP mastercard exactly for $999?
I’m not buying anything, just paying off a portion of my credit card balance. Evolve Money supports store/retail credit/charge cards.
Grant, really happy for you that you are moving to the Bay area and working on your full time job.
I would love to sign up with evolve, but hesitated till now. Can I make payments to any charge card – say Amex Plat, Macy’s card, etc?
Also, I am going to experiment with GCM purchases. Hope it doesn’t go awry and I get cashback just like you did.
Only some store cards can be paid with Evolve Money, but no major credit/charge cards. Maybe that feature will be added soon.
Thanks, Grant.

Hey Grant! You are awesome. :) I’ve been following your blog for about a year now and love it!! It also helps a lot that you’re in California too.
I have a sort of off-topic question – do you know whether cashback portals (ShopDiscover, ebates, topcashback, etc etc) pay cashback on portions paid with gift cards? For example, let’s say I have a $50 Sephora gift card and I click through ShopDiscover, which has 10% cashback, and buy something that is $60. I use the gift card and pay the remainder $10 with my Discover card. Does ShopDiscover pay 10% on $60, or only on $10?
Hopefully that made sense. Thanks! :)
Good morning Star, I believe according to Frequent Miler’s laboratory (http://frequentmiler.boardingarea.com/laboratory/), you should be able to earn cash back or points for the entire purchase amount, regardless if you use a gift card or not. Good luck and happy shopping.
Woohoo! Double dipping! Thanks! :D
Twice the fun!
