American Express Membership Reward Point Transfers to Frontier Airlines Ending on March 4, 2015

I just received an email from American Express regarding my AMEX PRG and AMEX Platinum Mercedes Benz credit cards with the ominous opening of “We are writing to provide you with an important notice regarding the account referenced above.”  Here are the 2 announcements from American Express.  I haven’t heard about this before, so I thought it was worth sharing for those of you who transfer Membership Reward Points to Frontier Airlines.

Frontier: Effective March 5, 2015, Frontier Airlines will no longer be a point transfer airline
in the Membership Rewards program. Any Membership Rewards point transfers for
Frontier Airlines must be made by March 4, 2015. These transfers will be considered final,
non-refundable, and subject to the EarlyReturns® program terms and conditions. To
transfer points to Frontier, please visit membershiprewards.com/travel.

For completeness, here is the other announcement regarding Membership Reward Point transfers to Delta Airlines:

Delta: We recently informed you of an annual limit on the number of Membership Rewards
points that you can transfer into the SkyMiles® Program. This change is canceled. There is
no annual limit to the number of points you can transfer to the SkyMiles Program.
Remember, you may only transfer a maximum of 999,000 points to a single SkyMiles
account per day.

Last but not least, I wanted to remind everyone that the 40% transfer bonus to British Airways Avios goes through January 31, 2015.  Click here to learn more about the transfer bonus.

why would anybody even want to transfer AMEX points to Frontier? I love the BA bonus, I just made good use of it.

F9 has 10K each way awards to Alaska in summer – the best choice for some cities (Midwest and East) where you’d likely have to piece together multiple awards or ridiculous routes otherwise. Pretty much the only reason I can see.

Thanks Kenny, I was unaware of their Alaska route network, I thought Frontier only flew in the continental US and to a few Central American countries.

Before Frontier became a ULLC, they were actually fun to fly, in my opinion. I have flown them from time to time, and still do, b/c they are Denver’s “Hometown” airline (I live in Colorado Springs) and they were often quite competitive with the other airlines flying out of DEN. (I hated it when they pulled out of COS, but oh well). I wasn’t going to be transferring too many more AMEX rewards points into Frontier anyway.

Do you think we will see the 40% bonus offer to BA again? Would love to take advantage of this but won’t be getting my MR points until after the Jan 31st cut off.

It seems like the good/really good BA transfer offers come around once a year, but there is no guarantee that it will be around again anytime soon. You should call AMEX and see if they will expedite posting your MR points to your account.

The reason that I am disappointed about this is that I have 40 000 Frontier points from before the airline was a ULLC. I liked the having the ability to easily add to them if needed to try to put these points to a good use.

I believe SPG is still a transfer partner of Frontier Airlines. I would try to redeem your Frontier points soon since I think something fishy is going on with the airline…
