Good morning everyone, happy Friday! I am heading up to Sacramento for a wedding this weekend (sorry, no Sacramento travel meetup like last time), but I have a quick post to share that could save you some precious(?) Hilton Honors Points. Back in August, my girlfriend and I booked a 2 night stay at the DoubleTree San Diego Downtown hotel for 39,000 Hilton Honors Points per night (78,000 points total).
Recently, I was looking through my existing Hilton reservations. I decided to see what the current paid and points rate were for the same hotel on the same dates. To my surprise, the price went down to 35,000 Hilton Honors Points per night (70,000 points total). I canceled the original reservation and 78,000 Hilton Honors Points were refunded back to my Hilton account. I then rebooked the same hotel for the same dates using only 70,000 Hilton Honors Points. I know saving 8,000 Hilton Honors Points is not a tremendous amount of points, but that is 8,000 fewer points I need to MS for my next Hilton stay.
I’ve never stayed at the DoubleTree San Diego Downtown hotel, but looking on Google Maps, it looks like a good location. I have plans to go to the San Diego Zoo and on a Seal Boat Tour around the San Diego Harbor, both activities are pretty close by. If anyone has stayed at this hotel recently, please let me know your thoughts of the hotel and nearby activities.
As for the current price of the hotel, I see rates of $152-$160 before taxes. The price is still 35,000 Hilton Honors Points, so I am getting 0.43 CPP ($152 / 35,000), which is pretty standard for Hilton properties.
After I rebooked this reservation, I checked my other Hilton award nights to see if their prices had dropped too. Unfortunately, I could not find any other price drops, but I will continue to check back every few weeks. Have you rebooked your Hilton award nights at a lower price? If you have any questions, please leave a comment below. Have a great weekend everyone!
P.S. If you want to learn more about San Diego’s best beaches and restaurants, check out Shelli’s posts about San Diego and Coronado.
If you have time, try to squeeze in the USS Midway aircraft carrier tour. I’d try to devote at least 2-3 hours. It’s pretty epic. They have jets and helicopters sitting on the deck that you can actually walk into and sit in the cockpit. Walking through the galley and crew quarters below deck is also very fascinating. And, if you have a Prestige or Premiere, it codes as 2x for entertainment.
Thanks for the tip. We will try to visit if we have time. Have a great weekend.
I’ve been able to change my award stay at the Hilton Whistler 4 times, to get a better award price. It only takes a few minutes to check, and in this instance, I was able to save over 40,000 points for a 4 night stay.
That’s excellent. Enjoy those refunded Hilton Honors Points.

Our son used to live in San Diego – make sure you go to the Crack Shack in Little Italy, right near the DoubleTree. Also, Extraordinary Desserts.
Thank you Mark, a friend of mine recommended extraordinary desserts as well, so we will definitely check that place out. Thanks for reading
