Guayaquil, Ecuador to Irvine, CA in 16 Hours on 4 Flights

Greetings from Guayaquil, Ecuador!  I am on my way back from the Galapagos Islands and Guayaquil is the only city that flies to/from the Galapagos.  Currently, I am staying at the Sheraton Guayaquil Hotel (hotel review and pictures to come shortly) on cash and points (3,500 SPG points + $55 = 4.14 cpp).

GYE SPG

My 16 hour journey begins at 7am tomorrow morning, flies through Miami, Tampa, Phoenix, and lands in Orange County, CA (SNA) at 9pm tomorrow night.

4 Flights

In case you were wondering, Guayaquil is in the Central Time Zone and is 2 hours behind the Pacific Time Zone.

I have a lot of info and some beautiful pictures to share.  Stay tuned for more to come.

Pros and Cons of Southwest Airlines Rapid Reward Credits

After yesterday’s Southwest Airlines devaluation, I have been reading comments on several travel blogs regarding transfer Southwest Airlines Rapid Reward Points to Southwest Airlines Credits.  To learn more, please read Mile Value’s post.  This information is from first hand experience since I blindly followed Mile Value’s steps.

I have already used one of my free one ways and have one more free to use before December 17, 2013.

Southwest Airlines Devalues Rapid Reward Points and Why Other Airlines Will Follow

Earlier today, Southwest Airlines sent out at email to their Rapid Reward members alerting them of a change to reward flight bookings (flights booked with points).  Currently, you can redeem 60 Rapid Reward Points for $1 of Southwest Airlines flights.  Starting March 31, 2014, it will take 70 Rapid Reward Points for $1 of Southwest Airlines flights.

SWA Change

Simple math to the rescue:

  • $1 / 60 Rapid Reward Points = 0.0167 cents per Rapid Reward Point
  • $1 / 70 Rapid Reward Points = 0.0143 cents per Rapid Reward Point
  • 0.0143 / 0.0167 = 15% more Rapid Reward Points needed

Even though it sucks that Southwest will require more Rapid Reward Points in the future, I still love Southwest’s route map, flexibility (no change fees or cancellation fees), free checked bags, and because they are a Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer partner.

If you look at Southwest Airlines, American Airlines, United Airlines, US Airways, and Delta’s financial statements, a huge portion of their revenue comes from “Ancillary Fees” and usually frequent flyer programs are the biggest component of that category.  All of the above airlines sell millions (and billions) of frequent flyer miles to banks to entice customers (like you and me) to sign up for their co-branded credit cards.

  • 1 million Southwest Airlines Rapid Reward Points / 50,000 Credit Card Sign Up Bonus = 20 credit cards.
  • 1 billion Southwest Airlines Rapid Reward Points / 50,000 Credit Card Sign Up Bonus = 20,000 credit cards.

I read somewhere that American Airlines sold more than 200 billion AA miles in 2012.  That’s billion with a ‘b’!  The airlines cannot afford to keep selling miles and have them be redeemed at the same price.  Their award chart will have to change in the future.

A friend asks: How many miles will you fly this year?

Math Numbers Equations

A friend asks: How many miles will you fly this year?

He wanted to know if I flew more than 100,000 miles, but I told him it was probably less than 10,000 miles for the year.  After he left, I started thinking more and though it was around 25,000 miles flown.  I kept thinking of trips I took earlier this year and trips that were coming up and wanted to get an exact number.

I wrote down all my flight segments and went on Great Circle Mapper to find the actual distances.  I’ve gone on quite a few trips this year and have plenty more flying through the rest of this year.  All my travel is personal, paid with miles or cash.

Total Miles Flown

I added up all the numbers and this is what I got… 44,624 flown miles, wow!  That might be my best year ever!

Air France 670
WestJet 1,081
LAN 1,455
United 4,841
Southwest 5,222
Alaska 6,337
American 12,503
US Airways 12,515
 TOTAL: 44,624

As you can tell, I’m literally “all over the map” (pun intended) with my airlines and don’t fly any airline exclusively.  How many miles will you have flown by the end of the year?  Let me know in the comments below.
