Travel with Grant is Visiting the Boarding Area Headquarters Tomorrow for Blog Enhancements

Greetings from snowy Colorado.  I am visiting the Boarding Area Headquarters tomorrow morning to catch up with Randy and the rest of the Boarding Area team.  My main purpose for my visit is to enhance my blog and make it more user friendly, for both desktop and mobile readers.  If you have any suggestions for things that would make my blog easier to read, comment, or browse, please let me know in the comments below.

For the first year and a half, this blog was created and designed by yours truly.  Since I am no graphic designer or computer programmer, my ability to enhance my blog has been severely limited.

Things I want to Change:

  • For desktop readers, I want my blog to take up the entire screen, not just the center 2/3 of the screen.  I feel like there is so much wasted space on the left and right side of my blog.  Making my blog more “full screen enabled” has been on my wish list for a long time.  This will also allow me to increase the font size a little bit.  Am I the only one that thinks the font is a little too small?

  • The next thing I want to fix is my ugly header.  I’m sure there has got to be a cleaner, more organized way to view my menu tree than the way it is currently presented.

  • For mobile readers, I want to make my blog as easy to read as possible.  I think I have a pretty good mobile site (using Chrome on iPhone), but I want to see if there is any way to make the images load faster and commenting easier.  I like commenting on other blogs, but it can be a hassle from my iPhone.  Some of the time I decide not to comment.  If it were really easy to comment, I think I would more comments per day.

Things that will not Change:

  • Since I am self-hosted, my blog is on a shared server with BlueHost, therefore there is nothing I can do to make my blog load faster, other than to move my blog to the Boarding Area server or pay BlueHost a much higher yearly rate to be on my own dedicated server.
  • Email subscribers will still continue to receive my emails as soon as a post is published.
  • I will continue to use Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn to publish my articles (and re-share my posts a few times by social media)

If you have any suggestions, please share them with me in the comments.  I will be at Boarding Area headquarters 9AM MST tomorrow, so please leave a comment before 9AM MST.  Thank you and have a great evening everyone!

I used to have my favorite posts/pages on the right sidebar, but I got rid of that a few months ago. It would be tough to pick my 3 favorite posts. I get a lot of traffic from search engines where visitors go directly to the post/page they are looking for. But I like the recommendation, thanks Kyle.

What is your opinion of thepointsguy.com layout? I like how he organizes his web pages, but I too much of his content is sold out to affliate links.

I agree with you James, his layout is pretty good, but there are a lot of affiliate ads and credit card ads all over his page. What do you think of my new header and sidebar, any thoughts?

I see on Twitter you are still at the airport trying to get home & leave cold COS! Yesterday was so warm for Jan but today, not so much. Best of luck & hope you had a very successful trip! I’m 20 minutes from the Springs & still haven’t gotten a Redbird–ugh! :)

The weather is too roller coastery for me. I like warm weather everyday, not every other day. Go to the Target by the IMAX movie theater. They had plenty :)

The weather is crazy here for sure. I wish we could live where it’s warm everyday but I do love it here! I need to get to Target while this deal is still going strong. I’m strangely reluctant to cancel my bluebird for some reason. thanks for the tip! Did you make it to DEN?

I’m about to board my flight to San Francisco, it’s been a crazy day. Maybe I’ll write a blog post about calling United four time
