Has anyone been to Hamburg or Copenhagen lately?
Happy Friday everyone! P.S. Don’t forget that today is the first Friday of April = Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card 3x at Restaurants. But not so fast, if you have your Chase Freedom Credit Card, you will get 5x (5% cash back) on all restaurants this quarter (from now through June 30).
Anyways, tomorrow night I am flying LAX to London (Virgin Atlantic) and from London to Hamburg (Germany Wings) for a travel conference next week. I will have 3-4 days in Hamburg and wanted to get your opinion on things to do.
So far, my top choices include:
1 – Miniatur Wunderland (link)
2 – Sandemans New Hamburg Tours – Free Walking Tour (link)
3 – Airbus Factory Tour (link)
4 – Kletterwald – tree obstacle course in Hamburg Forest (link)
Then I have a few days in Copenhagen, so the only things on my radar are:
1 – Carlsberg Brewery Visitor Center (link)
2 – Copenhagen Free Walking Tours (link)
If you have been to either city, please share what you think I should do. I will share more details later today. Thank you everyone!
Definitely hit up a bike tour of Copenhagen instead of the walking tour. We did it back in 2009 and it was fantastic!! And obviously, don’t miss Tivoli…a bit touristy, but worth a half day wondering around and eating at one of their great restaurants.
I’m not much of a bike rider, but I’ll check out Tivoli for sure!
Copenhagen native here.
I think Tivoli Gardens is worth a visit. Old amusement park and a very nice balance of charm and fun.
If the weather is nice there is also a boat tour that could be a nice complement to the walking tour.
Copenhagen also has Europe’s largest aquarium, The Blue Planet and should you want to find your inner geek & kid out ‘The Experimentarium’ could be fun.
Thanks Jacob, do you recommend any restaurants in Copenhagen? I want something that is good but not too pricy like Noka.
Copenhagen has excellent food actually. I’d recommend checking out http://www.visitcopenhagen.com but a few favorites:
Traditional lunch should be a priority if you have the opportunity. It’s a Danish delicacy of open faced sandwiches on rye bread ‘smørrebrød’ and is excellent. Top spots in my mind in downtown Copenhagen are ‘Restaurant Ida Davidsen’ or ‘Orangeriet’.
Nordic restaurants that I can recommend that are more affordable include ‘Marv & Ben’, ‘Höst’, ‘Relæ’ and ‘Manfred & Vin’. ‘Nose2tail’ is also fun in a basement in the meatpacking district and certainly good value for money.
Finally, if you’ve been out LATE and want to get some food at night before heading to bed ‘Rio Bravo’ is the place to go. Great and horrible simultaneously. Get the fried pork belly, with potatoes and parsley sauce (would be my pick as last meal on death row)
Thank you Jakob, I will definitely try to visit those places. I’m looking forward to some authentic Danish food.
Hi Grant:
I was in Hamburg and Copenhagen last summer. Besides doing the things you mentioned,
I enjoyed just walking in Hamburg. It is a gorgeous city. While walking, I came upon the
largest Apple store I had ever seen. In Copenhagen, I really enjoyed the boat tour. You
can either stay on or get off and on at different locations. You could take an hour train ride
and visit sweden.
Very helpful info, I forgot to mention the boat tours. That sounds really fun. Not sure I have enough time to make it to Sweden unfortunately. I arrive Friday morning and leave Sunday morning.
Hamburg is beautiful, I usually like the sandemans tour, but found this one a little weak. There is a bit of information about WW2 and they show you some nice buildings but it wasn’t anything amazing.
I loved miniature wonderland, try to pick a time when it won’t be packed with kids though and prebook your ticket. If you’re into running, running around the main lake area during sunset or sunrise is beautiful.
Very helpful advice Will. I’m not much of a runner, but I will definitely walk around the lake or something. Dang kids clogging up the Miniature Wonderland, I’ll try to go when it won’t be that busy.
Enjoy, never made it to Copenhagen before. Maybe this European summer I’ll finally make it. Still so much of Eastern Europe to see though and I really want to make it to Belarus this time ’round.
Same here. Lots of countries still left to visit in Europe.
