My First Time to Topgolf: Family-Friendly Driving Range with a Sports Bar

Good morning everyone, I hope your weekend is off to a great start.  By the time you read this post, I will be snowboarding in Tahoe/Reno (Northern California).  On Friday night, my brother and I stopped in Roseville, CA (a suburb outside Sacramento) and visited Topgolf.  I have heard about Topgolf before and I wanted to check it out.  The first thing I noticed about Topgolf is its size.  It towers over the surrounding houses and buildings and you can see the side netting from miles away.  Here is the front entrance.

Everyone who plays at Topgolf needs their own member card ($5/person) and you need to bring it every time you visit to load your profile.  If you forget your card, they can reprint the card for $1.

All Topgolf driving ranges are 3 levels tall and have bays (driving tees) on all 3 levels. Here is the layout of the greens and holes.  Instead of getting a bucket of balls, you wave your golf club over the red censor and a ball comes out the hole.

You can bring your own golf clubs or you can use the golf clubs provided for you.  We used their golf clubs and they worked fine (sorta like using a shared bowling ball versus using your own bowling ball).

Here is the view from the second level.  The holes are color coded and the closer you get the golf ball to the center of the green, the more points you can earn.

Here is the scoring system (before and after playing a game).  There are a few different games you can play and depending on how good you are at hitting the golf ball and aiming at the different greens, your score should be much better than mine.

You pay to use the bay / station.  We played for 1 hour and the cost was $45.  I’m not sure what the prices are for a shorter or longer duration.  I have heard that the prices vary depending on the time of day and day of the week, so your price may vary.

Each bay / station has their own outdoor seating and tables.  There is also a restaurant/bar inside with lots of sports to watch on TV.

Here is their dinner menu.  We got there around 5:30pm on Friday and there is no happy hour options.  The food is reasonably priced (compared to the prices in San Francisco).

My brother had the Sunrise Burger with Tater Tots (5/5); and I had the Pulled Pork Sliders (5/5) and Chicken and Waffle Sliders (4/5).  The beer selection was pretty good but didn’t have as many local beers as I wanted.  We had 2 beers and the 3 items below.  The total bill was $45 before tip.

Final thoughts?  I’m not sure what a traditional driving range costs, but this was much more fun.  The skill level (from what I could see) ranged from beginner to upper intermediate.  It was Friday evening, so everyone had just arrived from work.  Add in alcohol and laughter, and your skill level will naturally go down.  I wish I was a little more consistent with my swings, but I still had a great time.  If you have a few hours of free time, I would definitely recommend visiting Topgolf.  I would describe Topgolf as a Dave & Busters mixed with a driving range and maybe a Buffalo Wild Wings.

If you have any questions about Topgolf, please leave a comment below.  Have a great weekend everyone!

Dang, that’s crazy. I saw several bays/stations that were reserved, so there must be a way to make a reservation and not wait there the entire time.
