Good evening everyone, hello from the Park Hyatt Paris Vendome Hotel Indigo Paris (almost as nice). Since I am already in Paris, I have to get this post published of free things to see in London before all the memories disappear from my mind. I purchased a 1 day London Underground pass for 12 Pounds and you can basically go anywhere around London. Here are some pics that I took, in chronological order. Most of these places have a free aspect along with a paid aspect, without further ado…
Emirates Stadium – Home of the Arsenal Football Club
The stadium is beautiful, but you would be surprised to know that there are several small houses all around the stadium. Quite the dichotomy when you first walk out of the Underground station.
There is a really cool mural on the back side of the stadium that shows several of the team photos and they are all Photoshopped together into 1 continuous image. #verycool
Buckingham Palace – Changing the Guard
The British are coming! The British are coming! Come early (about 30-45 minutes) before the start to ensure you get a decent view of the show.
Walking across the bridge is free, but climbing up the stairs and walking across the top part costs money. According to the link, there are scheduled times when the bridge lift is in action.
You get an overload of smells coming from this small street market located underneath the train tracks. Eat like a local and pay very little.
Abbey Road – Walk like The Beatles (crossing cam)
This is the funniest crosswalk in London. You would think that this road would be quaint, secluded and on an unpopular road. Wrong! There are 4-5 lanes of cars/buses/taxis/bicycles that converge onto this crosswalk. Add in tourists standing in the middle of the street (guilty as charged) and you have a recipe for disaster and excellent people walking/watching :)
Big Ben and Houses of Parliament
You can see the clock faces of Big Ben from all over the city. Get a look at it during the day and again in the evening. Behind Big Ben is another huge structure…
According to Wikipedia: “Also known as the Millennium Wheel, it has also been called by its owners the British Airways London Eye, then the Merlin Entertainments London Eye, then the EDF Energy London Eye. Since mid-January 2015, it has been known as the Coca-Cola London Eye, following an agreement signed in September 2014.” I was actually planning to go up in the London Eye, but they are doing preventive maintenance this week :(
As with all my international trips, my mother reminds me to grab her a Starbucks mug from every major city. 1 mug down, 4-5 mugs to go…
My travelling companion, Rhianna, just posted about her experience in London with many pictures of sights to see, food to eat, and fashions to wear. Check it out :)
I don’t claim to be an expert after staying 2.5 days in London, but if you have any questions about any of the places mentioned above, please leave a comment below. Safe travels everyone!
Grant,
How is the Indigo? I’ve got an upcoming stay and wanted to know how they treat you, how nice is the room, etc.
The room is very nice. It’s about 1.5 blocks from the Opera metro stop and 2 blocks from the Vendome statue. No free breakfast for IHG Plat members (IHG credit card). The room is kinda funky, I will do a hotel review tomorrow. Stay tuned…
Wonderful! Did you use credit cards or cash when in London?
I only used my Citi Prestige CC in London. I didn’t need to get any Pounds out of the ATM either.
Did u happen to get a chance to try the grilled cheese at borough market??? Best I’ve ever had …. Have a blast!!
No, but I did smell really good :)
