$10 in Free Candy, Thank You AMEX Small Business Saturday!

Happy Small Business Saturday everyone!  Today only, get a $10 statement credit when you spend at least $10 at a small business.  You need to register your American Express credit card (link) before spending $10 on your credit card.  American Express has a list of small business merchants here, but you can also can also use your American Express credit card at any small business, even if it is not listed on the website (thanks to reader Lucy for letting me know).  You can register every American Express credit card you have and receive the $10 statement credit once per card.  You cannot register Bluebird, Serve, or other prepaid American Express cards.

I’m in Carmel, CA this week and found a candy store called Cottage of Sweets close by.

I registered my AMEX Blue Cash Preferred credit card and spent $10.10 on candy.

BCP Receipt

3 bags of red licorice and a peppermint candy cane… for free!, ok 10 cents.

I also received an email from AMEX stating that they are processing my $10 statement credit and will credit my account in a few days.

This is surprising. I was under the impression that only the businesses on the list qualified.

However, it’s AMEX. I’m sure even if your $10 credit doesn’t process, you can call them up and they’ll move it through. You could even say, “Hey, i had a bad day. Can I get a $10 credit” and they’d STILL probably get it from you.

Yeah Amex is pretty lax about those kinds of things. Amex gave me cashback at a Hyatt property even though it wasn’t on the list one time, too.

I registered 3 of my cards and had a nice meal, bought some take-out for a relative, and then went for a candy run at the locally-owned convenience store. AMEX already sent me an email thanking me for my participation in the event. Very cool.

How do you like your Blue Cash card? I was thinking about getting one since I”ll probably cancel my Starwood AMEX next year to avoid the fee. Can you move around balances like you can with Chase? And why didn’t you use your new platinum card for Small Biz Sat?

The Blue Cash Preferred has a $75 annual fee but I earn way more than that each year in cash back.

I used my Platinum card for pastries at a different store, but didn’t post pictures of my beheaded gingerbread men.

Oh, I thought there was a free version.

Is it your main spend card? Do you like it better than the Freedom and/or Sapphire?

There is a free one (Blue Cash Everyday) that only offers 3% cash back on grocery stores. The BCP offers 6% cash back grocery stores. I use that card for groceries and gift cards at grocery stores only.

An entire tank of gas $50. $10 at a time and 8 bottles of booze. The clerk was cool about ringing each bottle with a different card!

I bought a $200 gift card at Lazy Dog restaurant (using 20 AMEX cards), and in addition received a $5 gift card for every $25 spent – so walked out with $240 in gift cards. Not bad for perhaps 30 mins to register all 20 cards + 15 mins to complete the transaction!
