Goldstar Part 1: Introduction to Searching & Buying Discounted Event Tickets

Good morning everyone, happy Tuesday!  A few weeks ago, my friend told me about Goldstar Tickets and it is my latest obsession.  With Goldstar, you can purchase event tickets for 50% off or more.  Goldstar is similar to Groupon and LivingSocial, but the events are much, much better.

Here are 6 of my recent events from Goldstar.  In San Francisco, there are a lot of comedy shows, so I have seen a few comedians (Tom Papa, Dan Cummings, Lance Woods, and Godfrey (listed on page 2)).  I bought Wicked tickets for around $65 and was 10 rows from the orchestra.  The people around me probably paid $200+ for their tickets.  Lastly, RocketBoat is a 30 minute high speed jet boat ride around the San Francisco Bay playing rock and roll music.

Goldstar Passed Event Tickets

Currently, I have 14 upcoming Goldstar events.  Most of these are comedy shows and most are comp (free) tickets.  I will show you how to get comp tickets at the bottom of this post.

Before you begin searching on Goldstar, you need to sign up for a free account.  You can join using your Facebook profile or sign up with your email.  Once you signed into Goldstar, you can then begin searching for events, reading event reviews, and purchasing discounted tickets.

Goldstar All Events in San Francisco

Goldstar should default to your local city, but if not, you can select any city listed below.  When I select San Francisco, I can see events in Oakland, San Jose, and all other Bay Area cities.  Whenever I travel to a new city, I check Goldstar to see if there are any cool events to see while I am there.

If you are looking for a specific event category or for a specific date/range, you can change those options in the search area.

Here are a few search results for San Francisco.  I love cheap entertainment, so my favorite categories are comedy and sports.  Depending on your city and time of year, you can probably find some really cheap MLB tickets or preseason NFL tickets.  I love comedy shows and this is a great way to see some up-and-coming comedians for cheap (usually a 2 drink minimum is required per person per show).  Comp tickets are free, but usually include a $2-$8 service fee per ticket, depending on the event and venue.  20 Pop has great events for $20.  If you want something more scandalous, you can select Adult Only to view some interesting shows (drag shows and male dancing – this may be more of a San Francisco niche).  If you cannot find what you are looking for, you can always use the search box to search what you are looking for (like the Shrek Musical).

I will show you how easy it is to purchase a ticket from Goldstar.  One of my favorite shows in San Francisco is called Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind.  It is a very odd title, but the concept is fascinating:

An ever-changing attempt to perform 30 plays in one hour. This innovative show is one of Chicago’s biggest theatrical success stories. Created by Greg Allen, and written and performed by the Neo-Futurists, the original Windy City production has been running continuously since the Reagan administration, and now San Francisco has its own sibling company. The “menu” of plays is strung up on a clothesline, and you, the audience, determine the order by yelling out which piece you want to see next. Every performance is a unique experience, and the Neo-Futurists are masters of creating funny, personal, abstract, political and poignant plays.

Scroll down to the Select Your Date section and find a date/time that works for your schedule.  I always go to the 9pm Saturday showing.  The performance ends by 10:30pm.

Select the number of tickets you want to order and then click the Begin Checkout button.

Verify the date, time, price, payment method, and contact info, then click the Buy Now button.

I believe Goldstar codes as entertainment, since my Citi Forward cards shows “GOLDSTAR EVENTS, INC 626-204-3960 CA” and the details section says “THEATRICAL PRODUCTS-EXCEPT MOTION PICS.”  I will probably use my Citi Premier Credit Card after June 4, 2016, for Goldstar tickets since Goldstar should code as entertainment, earning 2x.  (Citi Terms and Conditions: 2 ThankYou Points for each $1 spent on purchases at restaurants (including cafes, bars, lounges and fast food restaurants), and on select entertainment, including live entertainment, live theatrical productions, concerts, live sporting events, movie theaters, amusement parks (including zoos, aquariums, circuses and carnivals), tourist attractions (including museums and art galleries), record stores, video rental stores and on-demand internet streaming media.)

Your purchase will be confirmed right away and you will get an email receipt with the order details.  If you have an iPhone or Android smartphone, you can download the Goldstar app, sign in, and view the tickets via Apple Wallet or Android Pay.  In most cases, if you show them the confirmation email, tickets on your phone, or just showing them your driver’s license, you will be good to go.

Tomorrow (or Thursday), I will write about Goldstar’s Red Velvet membership, but here is a sneak peek of the perks.

A warning to budget conscious comedy fans: most clubs have a “two item minimum” — either food or drink — per person.

I’m not sure if becoming a Red Velvet member will let you cancel an event you purchased before becoming a Red Velvet member. You could try, but it is a risk.
