  • Marc: Cross country road trip by myself and there were no radio stations available when my phone died. So I enjoyed several dead quiet hours at night with nothing but the desert roads in front of me and a heroic dose of caffeine in my cup holder.
  • Christina: Driving in Ireland with my sister, no GPS (WHY DIDN’T ANYONE TELL ME THEY DON’T USE SIGNS OR NUMBERS), lost for over an hour, ending up on a gravel road in the middle of farmland, and then blew a tire when I hit a hole, with a dead phone battery. The absolute worst travel experience ever. The upside: a nice farmer drove by about 20 minutes later, put his coat on the ground so I wouldn’t get dirty kneeling on the ground, and showed us how to put the donut tire on (and actually did most of the work), then drew me a detailed map how to make it to the main road. He wouldn’t take a monetary gift, just a smile and a handshake. And this is why I travel…life experiences and memories. PS: I want to go back to Ireland.

Good morning everyone. A few days ago, I reached out to GetTheJolt, the maker of my favorite all in one portable charger.  I bought 2 of these chargers on Amazon in November and have taken them with me everywhere.  My girlfriend uses 1 of The Jolt chargers almost everyday because she is always on her iPhone.  Long story short, one of The Jolt chargers would no longer charge, so I contacted The Jolt through their Contact Us page.  On their website, they state, “We have 3 customer service representatives that serve you from 7am – 7pm PST Monday through Friday. We promise to respond to all inquiries within an hour.”  Oh really, let’s see if that is really true…

About 30 minutes later, I received a call.  I was on my way to work, so I couldn’t answer the phone, so I texted the number back asking who was calling.  It was a member of The Jolt team reaching out to me regarding The Jolt charger.  After texting back and forth a few times, I called Mike and he was very thankful that I reached out directly to The Jolt instead of leaving a bad review on Amazon.

When I called Mike, he said that The Jolt chargers come with a 1 year warranty and since I was within that time period, he would send me a replacement charger.  A few minutes later, he emailed me asking for my mailing address.  I then learned that Mike was the founder of The Jolt.  Wow, what great customer service!  I responded to Mike’s email with my mailing address and asked him if he would send over 2 extra chargers so I could give them away to my readers.  He agreed and this giveaway was born! Mike also included two MicroUSB-to-USB Type C adapters and two All-in-One keychain / nail clipper / bottle openers. Each winner will win The Jolt, an adapter, and a keychain.

    The worst time I ran out of power was at Disney World! I used to have a Galaxy S3, and the battery was awful, so I knew that for an entire day at WDW, I’d need some power backups … I brought both my Mophie and a portable charger, but both were dead by 6pm.

    All of the WDW parks let you drop off your phone at Guest Services to charge it, so when I got to Epcot from Magic Kingdom, I dropped mine off … it went from 6% to 18% over two hours. I had JUST enough juice to order an Uber back to my hotel, before my phone died. Very thankful for that, at least!

    [I now have a Galaxy S8 and the battery is MUCH better – but when I went back to WDW this January I still brought a juice pack.]

    Worst time? I typically let me wife know when I arrive to wherever I’m going so she won’t worry… and wouldn’t you know it, on my arrival to an out of the way place where I go hiking, my phone dies just as I’m calling. She hears and sees it’s me calling but then nothing. Talk about being worried! I could have used a charge at that time!

    My worst experience with losing the charge in my phone was when I was getting on a train at 11pm after a music festival and realizing that my phone was dead. I had a 2 hour train ride back home after an exhausting day and couldn’t fall asleep for fear of sleeping through my stop. So, it was 2 hours of amusing myself with nothing in hand! Oh, and my electronic ticket was on my phone. Luckily, I had enough cash to pay for another ticket from the conductor.

    On a road trip from Orange County to the Getty and later Hollywood Walk of Fame with my wife and kids and along came my sister. All 3 adults had iPhones and we all forgot to bring our chargers. On the way from the Getty to Hollywood, we were all running out of juice in our iphone batteries. A verbal fight ensued as each wanted to use the built in charger in our car (Acura MDX) because we all wanted to check-in/tweet/update our social media friends about our trip. Of course, the ladies won the fight and got to charge their devices while my phone went to 4% :)

    We had a huge storm in our area, that left us without power for hours. Very helpless feeling too not be able to use anything…

    Just left an opening night party for a show I was working on and rather than get gas on the way to the show, I know I had enough to get back to the 24-hour gas station that was about halfway back on my route home. Sure enough, at about 2am, with my phone having just died I get to the gas station with the range indicator on my car reading 2 miles. See – I planned it perfectly – except for not realizing the gas station was no longer a 24 hour station. I took a route as much down hill as possible to the nearest highway where I figured I’d find a station with my range indicator flashing “0”. I didn’t quite make it to one and had to wait with flashers and wave down a cop and ask him to call AAA for me as I couldn’t do it on my dead phone. Never counted on a 24 hour station again!

    I got up at 3:00 a.m. for the flight from Bangkok to Paro and my dream trip to Bhutan! At the airport, despite having confirmed with the tour operator that everything was fine, I found out that I need a printed copy of my visa and route permit or I will not even be allowed to board the plane in Thailand. The airline was nice enough to check, and I am not even in the visa database. Phone is DOA. Laptop has less than 10% power. One outlet in the waiting area and no possibility to share. Desperately trying to reach tour operator before 5:00 a.m….

    I was not allowed to board the plane.

    Worst Time I ran out of power is when I forgot to charge my phone the night before and was waiting for the call for the first step in a job interview process. My phone made it to 5% when the call finished. I was so nervous that the call would be dropped before the interview was completed.

    My flight was delayed and I was going to miss my connection. Reached out to the airline Twitter team while we were still taxiing to the gate and they had a rep call me right away. I was talking to them onboard about alternate flights and right when he was about to ticket me on a later flight, my phone died.

    By the time I deplaned, got back into the terminal, charged the phone and called the airline back, all the seats on that later flights were gone. That was the last flight out to my destination that day. Had to overnight and catch an early morning flight.

    Super storm Sandy in lower Manhattan. No electricity, no subway, no elevator (I live on the 25th floor of an apartment building), no working internet towers nearby, no streetlights or traffic lights at night, but plenty of traffic drivers attempting to navigate at night. I don’t have a car, so sub-20 degree weather outside to trek 30 blocks to midtown (and 30 blocks back) where some stores were open to get food.

    Lost power in my home for 4 days during a winter storm so couldn’t charge phone and had to stay and keep a gas stove going to keep pipes in house from freezing. Had signed up for text alerts from the electric company when my neighborhood power would be restored, but unable to receive them due to dead phone.

    i was on my 6 year round the world bike ride. dependent, like an addict!, on googlemaps. somehow, something triggered my iPad to stay active in my handlebar bag.

    it had been fully charged. i was in bolivia. needed to figure out my rights and lefts to stay course. no worries. googlemaps!

    pulled out my iPad at 12000 feet. 3% battery. ack!! ack!!!!!!!!!!

    i did have inaccurate paper maps as backup. but i surely wish i’d could have had a “JOLT”!!!!

    The worst time I ran out of power was on our summer 2017 vacation. It was my phone. This was the first time I had decided to leave my camera @ home & just use my phone for pictures so I didn’t have my camera for backup. To make matters worse, I didn’t have my charging cord to connect my phone to my charger. Epic fail!!!

    Driving home from Montana to Florida in an overloaded van and a tire delaminated, flip flop flop…. at night on a back road in between god know where. No way I can change it, grab the phone of course it is dead since I did not have a car charger with me. I ended up walking about half a mile to a restaurant that had closed for the evening and begged to use their phone to call AAA, of course it took forever for him to come and we had to unload half the van to get to the donut and then drive about 20mph to the next town to keep that one from exploding so I could get a new one in the morning. No way to check reviews or book a room ahead, so ended up at an overpriced motel so bad that the dog threw up from the mold. I now never unplug my phone when I am anywhere near a power source.
