Whether or not you buy hotel points when promotions are running, it’s good to know about your options. We all like to travel more, for less! Topping up accounts for an upcoming stay can serve us well when we can get more value from the cost of the stays than we spend on buying those points. I use up my SPG points and Hyatt points way faster than I drink my flat whites, so I keep a list of hotel point promos handy to see if they’ll work for me. Currently, three of the four major hotel chains are running their buy points promotions. Depending on your travel plans, these might be worth checking out.
Starwood Offer: Expires March 16, 2018
I find I can never have enough SPG points. They are extra valuable because when you transfer them to airlines rather than use them for hotel stays, for every 20,000 points transferred, you get an extra 5,000 points. That’s an inexpensive way to buy airline miles. Many people, given their allegiance to Marriott, use these points for Marriott stays as well. They transfer to Marriott in a 1:3 ratio. That’s another good value for these points. Starwood is currently running a 35% off promotion so you can buy the maximum amount of points for $682. And don’t forget, you can gift Starwood points as well. The 35% offer seems to be their standard offer. Starwood has a yearly purchase limit of 30,000 points per account. The offer runs through March 16, 2018.
Hilton Offer Expires March 16, 2018
Right now, I have a healthy stash of Hilton points, but maybe you need them for some upcoming stays. Hilton’s promotion is 100% extra points, but everyone’s offer is different. That would mean, given the total amount you can purchase is 80,000 Hilton points, you’ll get an extra 80,000 all for $800. Hilton does run promotions all throughout the year and if your offer is less than 100% and you don’t currently have a need for Hilton points, you might want to hold out and wait for that offer. It’s likely you’ll get it sooner or later! The offer runs through March 16, 2018.
IHG Offer Expires February 28, 2018
I’m still learning about the best uses for IHG points. People do get great value from these points, both at the high end of IHG properties and also when they travel with families and are looking for budget friendly hotels. IHG’s points promotion is for 75% extra points after buying 20,000 or more points. The maximum you can buy is 60,000 + 45,000 for $690. Many IHG fans use their Accelerate promotions to earn extra points, but if you still need to top up your account, this promo might be worth looking at. The offer ends tomorrow, February 28, 2018.
Buying points can be a good deal as long as you make math your friend and have a plan in mind. The Golden Rule about this that works best for me is to not purchase points I don’t see myself using within a year’s time. I would think most, if not all of us, have had some wonderful hotel stays in great properties using hotel points. I have been able to get good value from buying and redeeming hotel points. Points help me travel more for less! Are any of these current hotel promotions of value to you? Let me know in the comments below!
