Good morning everyone, I hope your weekend is off to a great start. Unfortunately, if you were planning on shopping on eBay with your American Express cards today, you will run into an issue. Effective today (August 17, 2024), American Express cards are no longer accepted on eBay as a form of payment. This announcement came out of nowhere, but it sounds like the decision came from eBay’s side, instead of AMEX’s side. But, there is a workaround if you add your American Express card to your PayPal or Venmo account.
Here is the full announcement about the change:
As of today, you won’t be able to use American Express as a form of payment on eBay, and the American Express card that was saved on your account has been removed. We understand this change may impact you, and we’re including all the information you need to ensure a smooth checkout experience.
If you’d like to continue using your American Express card on eBay, you can add it to your PayPal or Venmo account.
Alternatively, if you haven’t added another payment method to your account yet, please do so right away. You can choose from the wide variety of payment methods we accept, including PayPal, Venmo, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and credit and debit cards such as Visa, Mastercard, and Discover.
Rest assured, purchases made on eBay using your American Express card before August 17 are still valid, and any returns after this date will be refunded to your American Express card. Additionally, your eligibility for eBay buyer protection programs, including eBay Money Back Guarantee, won’t be affected.
On the eBay checkout page, there is this announcement: “We no longer accept American Express. To use an Amex for purchases, link it to your PayPal or Venmo account.” When I buy stuff on eBay, I usually use the eBay app and pay with my US Bank Altitude Reserve Credit Card via ApplePay to earn 3x on the mobile payment. As far as I am aware, there was no eBay category bonus that was available on AMEX cards, so this shouldn’t be a huge loss to anyone.
I am sure eBay and AMEX will come to some sort of agreement in the future and I am sure AMEX will be back as a payment method in the coming weeks or months. I believe it all came down to how much AMEX wanted to charge eBay for payments and the fee was too high, and probably higher than Visa, MasterCard, and Discover. If you have any questions about this change, please check out this eBay page or leave a comment below. Have a great weekend everyone!

Amex has been sending their side of the notice for over a month now. They claim they don’t believe their fees are any higher and they are disappointed eBay made that decision. No hint of reconciliation, but who knows.
Hmm I’m sure this loss will affect AMEX more than eBay. We will see if there is any reconciliation.
