False Alarm!  Online Serve Reloads are Posting as Purchases (Not Cash Advances)

(Hat tip to RRGG for keeping me informed along the way)

It’s been an exciting last 24 hours, but I am happy to share some good news.  According to FlyerTalk (link) and comments on my last post (link), online Serve reloads are not posting as purchases (and earning miles/points/cash back as before).

Serve Reloads Posting as Credit Not Cash Advances

For some reason, online Serve reloads are affecting cash advance balances across many banks, especially Chase.  Even though the cash advance balance changes, no actual cash advance fees are posting.   Continue reading

*Some* Chase Credit Cards Charging Cash Advance Fees for Online Serve Reloads

There have been reports on FlyerTalk (link) and some Tweets that Serve is now charging cash advance fees for *some* online Serve reloads.  Most of the cash advance reports state that Chase is charging cash advance fees for online reloads.

RRGG on the FlyerTalk thread (link) has some good info:

It seems like you should include a little more information if you’re going to start a new thread. You didn’t mention the type of card for example. NOT EVERYONE is getting a cash advance from Chase, as mentioned in the Serve thread.

There are reports of no cash advance today on:
UA Explorer Visa
UA Explorer MC
Sapphire Preferred
Southwest Visa
Also Barclay, Citi cards (Prestige), Fidelity AMEX

There are reports of a cash advance today on:
UA Club
UA Explorer
Ink Bold Visa
Sapphire Preferred
Also a Capital One card

As you can see it’s not even consistent.

Finally, in the past sometimes Chase has posted these as cash advance at first. After a few days they get changed to a regular charge. If anyone actually got a cash advance fee, you might want to share that.

Don’t Disrupt your App-O-Rama Schedule by Applying for the Chase Ink Plus Credit Card #Rant

Don’t Disrupt your App-O-Rama Schedule by Applying for the Chase Ink Plus Credit Card #Rant

Honestly, you could replace “Chase Ink Plus” with any other credit card and the argument would still be valid.  Every few weeks, a large credit card sign up bonus comes out and the entire blogosphere goes crazy!  Let me refresh your memory:

  • Chase United MileagePlus – 50,000 United Airlines miles
  • American Express SPG – 30,000 SPG Points
  • Chase Ink Bold/Plus – 60,000 Chase Ultimate Reward Points
  • Chase Freedom – 20,000 Chase Ultimate Reward Points
  • Citi American Airlines Executive – 100,000 American Airlines miles
  • And so on and so on…

So what’s my point? Most of the credit cards above have increased sign up bonuses for several weeks, if not months.  I was approved for every card on the above list, even though I did not apply as soon as the  increased sign up bonus came out.  Let me say this again, just because a credit card has recently raised the sign up bonus, doesn’t mean you should go and apply for the card as soon as possible.

Let me explain…  Continue reading

Supervalu / Albertsons / ACME / Jewel-Osco / Shaws / Star Market Data Breach and 12 Months of Free All Clear Identity Theft Monitoring

This morning, I was reading the Wall Street Journal online and saw read this article: Supervalu Reports Second Hacking Incident – August Data Breach Affects Certain Albertsons, Acme, Jewel-Osco and Shaw’s Stores (link).  The part that really caught my attention said:

As a precaution, Supervalu and AB Acquisition said they will offer 12 months of free consumer-identity protection services through AllClear ID to customers whose information may have been compromised in the hacking incidents.

If you have at any of these supermarkets during the last few months, you may want to sign up for a free 12 month identity protection plan from All Clear (link).  The process is pretty simple, to start, just check the box and enter your full name and email address.

Random News: Chase Fraud Warnings, 2 Admirals Club Passes from Citi, Happy Birthday from Chime, Fandango BOGO with US Bank FlexPerks, and Several AMEX Offers

Good morning everyone, it is a very busy morning.  Alibaba (BABA) IPO opens today, lots of attention in the financial markets.  All the attention is overshadowing Apple’s iPhone 6/Plus debut.  My iPhone 6 should be arriving any minute now from FedEx.  I am catching a flight this afternoon to Las Vegas to attend Boarding Area’s Conference (BACon).  With that said, here are some random news from the past week…

Here is an email you never want to get – an email from Chase asking if you made the following purchases.  I didn’t make these purchases, uh oh.  I clicked the big red NO button and called Chase to ask for a new card.
