Saturday Reader Question: What Dish Would You Travel For?

Do you and your friends talk about food and amazing meals you’ve enjoyed, places you’ve been and places you have yet to visit, and your airplane experiences? Sure you do! Last week, my friends and I were having just this type of fun conversation and we asked each other three questions: what dish would you travel for? Where are you embarrassed to say you’ve not yet been? And what is your dream plane? So since it’s Saturday and the last day of the month, let’s relax a little and have some fun with these questions. Here are my answers to these 3 questions:

What dish would I travel for? The hummus in Jerusalem came to mind first. Then the mussels in New Zealand. They are amazing. The osso buco in Milan was the best ever. I could eat the pesto, made in the Cinque Terre area of Italy, every day.

Where haven’t I been yet? Spain. I know, I know, everyone loves Spain. I just booked a trip, though. Embarrassment can be motivating!

What is my dream plane? My dream plane would have those great foam pillows that everyone wants to take from United’s Polaris planes, a soft lightweight fleece blanket, and San Pellegrino in an assortment of flavors.

One of my friends said she’d travel for the tortilla Espanola and the paella in Spain, so I’m in for a treat when I travel there. Another friend said her dream plane would have a lending library. I thought that was an excellent idea. So how about you? You can answer all three questions or just one. I’m looking forward to having fun reading your answers and also looking to add some of your suggestions to my wishlist. Please leave your answers below and have a great weekend!

HI Kalboz, I’ve got a trip planned to BKK, so this one goes on the list. Paris is a one of a kind city. I really enjoy it because I’m a big city girl. CX is one of my favorites, though I’ve only flown business. Thanks for adding to the conversation!

Let me contribute to this conversation…

    1. I love gelato, so I would travel to Italy for gelato.
    2. I have never been to Asia, Australia, Africa, or Antarctica.
    3. Any plane that has a lie flat bed would work for me.

Well you know I’m a gelato fan too, so definitely a great choice! I see you need to get to the front of the alphabet places:) My favorite lie flat beds were on Emirates and Turkish. All good choices…….thanks, Grant!

I like the idea of dishes that you would travel for and I hope to see some more responses. For me, the city of Kuching in Malaysian Borneo had my favorite. They have a seafood market set on the top of a parking garage, which operates each evening (I think). Multiple vendors setup and they feature a massive selection of fish & shellfish. The prices are cheap and the quality seemed superb. The vendors were able to explain to us for each entree the options on how they would prepare the item for us (different sauces, veggies) and what everything costs – buying seafood can often be confusing from a cost perspective in many places. We went there all three nights we had in the city and ate like kings each time. From looking at Trip Advisor, I think it was probably “Topspot Bukit Mata Seafood Centre”

HI TimmyD, I hope we’ll see more responses, and glad you liked the idea. Wow, your seafood market in Malaysian Borneo looks amazing. I’d eat there every night, too! Thanks for adding to the conversation and have a great Sunday.

I also like the food in Malaysia. I would travel for the amazing traditional dishes there, such as laksa, Hainanese chicken rice, char kway teow, and nasi lemak. In January this year, I was especially impressed with the food market in Kota Kinabalu. The fresh and exotic fruit in southeast Asia is amazing, such as mango, mangosteen, dragon fruit, bananas, rambutan, durian, and pineapple. Next time I travel to Malaysia, I want to check out a seafood market. I didn’t do that last time around, but your comment on it seems interesting.

To answer the second question, I haven’t been to Sarawak. I’m very eager to visit the Kelabit Highlands, and hope to have a chance someday. I also haven’t been anywhere in peninsular Malaysia besides Kuala Lumpur. The G7 summits look very interesting, which includes Taman Negara National Park.

My dream plane would be any plane where it’s comfortable to sleep on board. That would mean the ability to lie flat. So, it’s essentially something that already exists.

HI Brandon. Your comment made me quite hungry! I’ve had some of the Malaysian dishes you’ve mention but not all of them. And yes, I agree about the fruit. I also found the fruit in French Polynesia to be incredible in both variety and taste. I haven’t been to Borneo, so from both yours and TimmyD’s comments, it seems to be a wonderful place to visit. I’d say lie flat seats are everyone’s dream plane :) Enjoy your weekend, and thanks for reading!
