Have you been wondering how the Hotel Del Coronado is doing now that rooms can be booked using Hilton Honors Points? Here’s the latest update! I’ve been curious about The Del as it’s been just over a month since rooms were bookable using Hilton Honors Points. So I stopped in yesterday to talk with the front office / guest services folks who I spoke with earlier in the summer.
I appreciated their time and honesty. They said the first couple of weeks were rough. Procedures were confusing and the lines at check-in were really long. They put out a small Hilton Honors sign on the side of the check-in desk, but Hilton members weren’t sure if they were supposed to go to a separate line, or cut in line to the front, or what. Of course, no one likes to be the one to cut in line when others in line don’t know what’s going on.
Guest services assured me that now procedures are much better and the flow of checking people in is being handled better. I asked for approximate stats on what percentage of rooms were being booked with points. They told me 35% and on some days, it seems like every other guest is a Hilton Honors member.
I asked if there were any complaints from the Hilton elite members staying at The Del. This of course led to a brief conversation about Hilton Diamond Elite members and what’s happening with breakfast. When a Hilton Diamond Elite member checks in, they are given this card. The $20 upgrade you see mentioned on the card is per person.
It’s very quiet right now in Coronado after the summer season, though The Del felt busy with a few in-house conferences. This is a great time of year to visit The Del and San Diego! If anyone has stayed at The Del using Hilton Honors Points, let us know how your experience went. If you have a stay booked, I hope this gives you a bit more of a feel as to how The Del is managing the influx of Hilton members. Any questions, please let me know.
Interesting to know. I went to the Hotel Del once for a Yelp event, during Yelp Spring Break – BEAUTIFUL hotel and beach.
Hi Liz, If you ever get a chance, September is a great month to visit. Always beautiful, but September also brings a quieter setting :) Thanks for reading!
This is really helpful information. I have a Hilton Honors stay (Diamond) scheduled for a night during the first week of October. I’m wondering if the b’fast buffet is so good that it is worth the $20 upgrade fee. Hmmm…no matter, I’m really looking forward to this stay (it’s been on my list forever!0
HI Beth, You may be the first Diamond member I know who will be staying at The Del! I was hoping to see the buffet spread, but got there too late. You’ll have to let us know what you think. Have a great time, and thanks so much for reading and taking the time to comment.
Honestly, September is one of the best times to visit San Diego and Coronado! It’s much better than mid May-early July with May gray/June gloom, doesn’t get too hot like in October to early November with Santa Ana winds.
Hi there Jon! No arguments from me on your seasonal tips. The beach is so quiet now, and the waves perfect for body surfing. Hope you get home soon :)
We stayed at the Del, Mar 3 2018. Dimond members recieve the upgraded buffet for $20 with the voucher. If you only want the continental breakfast, stay away from all the delicious hot foods! We used the upgrade and it was fantastic!
Thanks so much for letting me know. Glad you enjoyed your stay. I was in Coronado earlier this week and it looked like the off-season crowd, which means you had the beach all to yourself :)
