Good morning everyone, I hope you are all having a great Memorial Day Weekend. I am having a lazy 3 day weekend in San Francisco (I looked at traveling for Memorial Day Weekend too late, so all the award flights and cheap tickets were gone). But the good news is that I have 2 great good decent US Bank Club Carlson credit card spending offers to share – one for my personal credit card and another for my business credit card.
For my US Bank Club Carlson Personal Credit Card, I can earn up to 2,000 bonus Club Carlson points after spending $650 on the credit card.
Remember, the US Bank Club Carlson Personal and Business Credit Card earn 5x everywhere. Here are the calculations:
- Base spend for first $650 = 650 x 5 = 3,250
- Base spend for the second $2,000 = 2,000 x 5 = 10,000
- Bonus spend for the second $2,000 = 2,000 x 1 = 2,000
- Total Club Carlson points earned for spending $2,650 = 15,250
I don’t really know what Club Carlson points are worth, but here are a few examples with various cents per point (CPP) valuations:
- 15,250 x 1.00 CPP = $152.50 in value / $2,650 = 5.75% rebate
- 15,250 x 0.50 CPP = $76.25 in value / $2,650 = 2.87% rebate
- 15,250 x 0.25 CPP = $38.13 in value / $2,650 = 1.44% rebate
For my US Bank Club Carlson Business Credit Card, I can earn up to 2,000 bonus Club Carlson points after spending $2,000 on the credit card.
- Base spend for first $2,000 = 2,000 x 5 = 10,000
- Base spend for the second $400 = 400 x 5 = 2,000
- Bonus spend for the second $400 = 400 x 5 = 2,000
- Total Club Carlson points earned for spending $2,400 = 14,000
I don’t really know what Club Carlson points are worth, but here are a few examples with various cents per point (CPP) valuations:
- 14,000 x 1.00 CPP = $140.00 in value / $2,400 = 5.83% rebate
- 14,000 x 0.50 CPP = $70.00 in value / $2,400 = 2.92% rebate
- 14,000 x 0.25 CPP = $35.00 in value / $2,400 = 1.46% rebate
Another way to value Club Carlson points is by looking at the anniversary points you get each year when you pay the annual fee. Each US Bank Personal and Business Credit Card gives you 40,000 Club Carlson points after you pay the $75 annual fee for the personal credit card and $60 for the business credit card. 80,000 Club Carlson points for $135 comes out to 0.1688 cents per point. Here are the revised calculations with the new CPP inserted:
- Personal: 15,250 x 0.1688 CPP = $25.74 in value / $2,650 = 0.97% rebate
- Business: 14,000 x 0.1688 CPP = $23.63 in value / $2,400 = 0.98% rebate
Those rebate percentages are pretty terrible and I am currently sitting on 116,989 Club Carlson points, so I am not really interested in earning more Club Carlson points with these targeted spending offers.
If you receive a different US Bank Club Carlson spending offer, please let me know. If you have any questions about the calculations above, please leave a comment below. Have a great Memorial Day Weekend everyone!
P.S. I am planning a trip and I need some help. How many days should I spend in Bogotá, Colombia (BOG), Buenos Aires, Argentina (EZE) and Iguazu, Argentina (IGR)? I still have to figure out how to get from Bogotá to Buenos Aires. Thank you for your help! The colorful route map below is made by Great Circle Mapper.
Two or three days in Iguazu should be sufficient. That’ll give you time to hike around the falls on both sides (note: you may need a Brazilian visa to visit that side), take a jetboat ride in and around them and a helicopter ride above. If you’ve never been to Paraguay, you can easily visit Ciudad del Este too. Not much to see there, but you can tick off another country. I’d allocate four days at a minimum in BA, more if you want to spend some time in Uruguay (Montevideo, Colonia and Punta del Este are not too far away). Great steak dinners, tango shows, Palermo, Recoleta and La Boca are some of the highlights. Enjoy!
Thank you for the great tips and advice. Regarding the Brazilian visa, I believe it is good for 10 years, so if I get it on my next trip and only use it to go to the Brazilian side of the falls, I am sure that I will be back to Brazil within the next 10 years.
I believe most bloggers don’t value the Club Carlson points the right way. For me is about how much I need to spend on a non-bonused category to stay on a top category hotel. For example, I need to spend $14K to stay at the best Carlson hotels, while staying at a top Spg would require more than twice that amount…Points per point spg might be more valuable, but I see more value in using club Carlson for non-bonused categories.
I totally understand your perspective, I would agree even more if Club Carlson still offered the Last Night Free bonus. I’m not loving the categories of Club Carlson hotel since most hotels tend to be in the 38,000, 44,000, or 50,000 point range and the price per night can vary from $80 – $300 for any of those hotels. If you find value with Club Carlson points, more power to you :)
