PSA: Check Existing Travel Reservations for Cyber Monday Price Drops (Southwest 10K, IHG 8K & Marriott 6K Points Savings)

Good afternoon everyone, I hope you had a great weekend and your Cyber Monday is going well too.  Since everything seems to be on sale today (including travel), I checked all my existing airline and hotel reservations and found a few price drops with Southwest Airlines, IHG Hotels, and Marriott Hotels.  I’m sure other travel providers have discounts too, so check your existing travel reservations.  First up, a Southwest Airlines flight dropped 5,173 points per passenger for my wife and I to travel after Christmas.

I was able to keep the same record locator (which kept the Southwest Airlines EarlyBird Check-In that I paid for a few days ago with my Chase Southwest Airlines Priority Credit Card) and get back 10,346 points (worth about $150).

Up next, I was able to rebook a Hotel Indigo San Diego reservation that dropped from 57,000 points to 49,000 points.  I originally used an IHG Free Night Certificate from my Chase IHG Rewards Premier Credit Card + 17,000 IHG Points.  I cancelled that reservation, waited for the IHG Free Night Certificate to get redeposited into my account, and then booked the same hotel with my IHG Free Night Certificate + 9,000 IHG Points.

As you can see, I received 17,000 points for cancelling the original reservation and then used 9,000 points to book the new reservation, saving a total of 8,000 points (worth about $40).

Lastly, I was able to rebook a Westin South Coast Plaza Costa Mesa (close to John Wayne Airport) reservation that dropped from 31,000 points to 24,800 points, thanks to Marriott’s PointSavers rate.

The 31,000 points we credited back to my account and then I was able to book the stay with 24,800 points, a savings of 6,200 points (worth about $50).

If you have an existing travel bookings, I would recommend checking them all to see if the price has dropped.  If it did, see if you can rebook the same reservation or cancel the original reservation and then create a new booking.  If you have any questions, please leave a comment below.  Have a great day everyone!
