What’s the best way to earn hotel loyalty points? There are as many answers to that question as there are hotel chains! So when people ask me that question, here’s how I answer. The four most popular answers would likely be: stay at a hotel, spend on a credit card that’s affiliated with the hotel chain, get a credit card with an oversized bonus of hotel points when you meet the minimum spend, and if and when the need arises, buy hotel points on sale and use them to get super value from an award night stay.
Maybe because summertime is around the corner and the high travel season is upon us, it seems like right now Hilton Honors is upping their game both in credit card increased bonuses, and by putting their Hilton Honors points on sale.
Buying points or miles is a hot topic in the travel community. Everyone, sooner or later, develops a general philosophy as to whether purchasing hotel points is a never, sometimes, or most times option. I think many of us waffle back and forth and realize it’s a case-by-case basis. It’s often based on our individual needs such as: destinations, a particular award we have in mind, or topping up an account for an award. The decision to buy points can also be motivated by wanting to use points for an expensive cash rate hotel night making a premium hotel experience less expensive. Having a clear purpose in mind for the points is always the best way to reach a decision.
Whether or not you buy hotel points when promotions are running, it’s good to know about your options. We all like to travel more, for less! I keep a list of hotel point promos handy to see if they’ll work for me. Through June 7, 2018, you can purchase Hilton Honors Points with a 100% bonus. This increased offer usually comes around once or twice a year so this is a great time to buy if you have a specific destination in mind. Always do the math to see if purchasing points actually works out in your favor. The best use of Hilton points is when the paid rates are expensive. Even lower category Hilton properties can be expensive! The price of a Hilton Honors points purchased at 100% bonus is .5 cents each.
Hilton allows you to purchase up to 80,000 points per account per calendar year. So with this promotion, you can get up to 160,000 points (you are purchasing points at .5 cents per point). The minimum to purchase for the 100% bonus to kick in is 5000 points.
Buying hotel points can be a great way to save money on hotel stays. Make sure, as best you can, that you have a use for them in the not too far off future! Make math your friend and have a plan in mind. The Golden Rule about this that works best for me is to not purchase points I don’t see myself using within a year’s time. I would think most, if not all of us, have had some wonderful hotel stays in great properties using hotel points. I have been able to get good value from buying and redeeming hotel points.
