Good afternoon everyone. On May 27, I wrote PSA: Rental Car Rates are Sky High, Book ASAP. In that post, I shared my bewilderment at the sky high rental car rates, especially in Hawaii. I needed 2 small / economy rental cars for Lihue and Kona for a 9 day trip and the cheapest prices available were $1,967.98 total for both rentals. At that time, I had about 2 months before my Hawaii trip, so I put all my trust and faith in AutoSlash to find me cheaper rental cars. Less than 2 weeks later (June 9), I wrote AutoSlash Already Saved Me $400 on 2 Rental Car Reservations. Saving $400 in less than 2 weeks was a great start, but I hoped AutoSlash could continue to find me cheaper rental cars. 2 weeks after that (June 21), I wrote AutoSlash Saved Me Another $500 on 2 Rental Car Reservations. I had already saved $900 on my 2 rental cars in less than a month and almost cut the cost of the rental cars in half. Luckily, AutoSlash was not done working their magic. In this post, I will share my final results and show you how AutoSlash saved me more than $1,300 on my 2 rental cars.
The last and best AutoSlash deal for Lihue came on June 20 from Hertz for $397.87.
I tracked that rental with AutoSlash, but they could not find me a better price in the month leading up to my Hawaii trip.
Here is the final Hertz bill after we dropped off our rental car. When we dropped off our rental car, I wanted to change the credit card on file to my new Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card since I was working on the $4,000 minimum spending requirement. When we were talking to the agent, I mentioned we were celebrating our 2 year wedding anniversary and she graciously offered to take off a full day on our rental (saving $60.25). The final charge for our Hertz rental car came out to $332.35.
Here is a timeline of the rental car bookings for Lihue. My initial price was $1,068.86 and my final charge was $332.35, a total savings of $736.51. Woo hoo!
The last and best AutoSlash deal for Kona came on July 21 from Alamo for $307.01 (just a few days before our Hawaii trip).
I tracked that rental with AutoSlash, but they could not find me a better price in the days leading up to my Hawaii trip.
Here is the final Alamo bill after we dropped off our rental car. I’m not sure why the final bill was a few dollars cheaper, but I am guessing it had to do with some of the taxes.
Here is a timeline of the rental car bookings for Kona. I had quite a few rebookings, but it was worth the time and effort. My initial price was $899.12 and my final charge was $300.82, a total savings of *only* $598.30. Woo hoo!
If I add up the total savings from both rental cars, the grand total comes to a total savings of $1,334.81. That is a personal record for me and I owe it all to AutoSlash. If you are not using AutoSlash for your rental cars, you will definitely pay more than you should. If you have any questions about AutoSlash, please leave a comment below. Have a great day everyone!
I’ve used AutoSlash many times but it my experience it only ever pulls results from Priceline which makes me wonder why I wouldn’t just use Priceline.
Hi Doug, AutoSlash makes money (a commission) whenever you book your rental car using their Priceline link. I reward them with a Priceline commission for finding me the best rental car rates and not charging me a fee for their service.
What you may not realize Doug is that when we send you to Priceline to book, we embed discount codes in the booking links that lower the price.
On your next rental (or just pick any random location and dates now as a test), try searching Priceline first and then request a quote from AutoSlash. I think you’ll find that the “Priceline” rates through AutoSlash are significantly cheaper than a regular search on their site.
Feel free to reply here if you’re not finding that to be the case. :)
Looks like you paid around $630 for 9 days. If that is correct it’s about $70 per day. Not bad in the current rental environment! I guess the last time I was in Kauai for a week was about 4 years ago. I think I got a deal for around $50 per day. You did great!!
Hi Brant, $70 per day sounds right to me. I’ve paid much less before the pandemic on various rental cars around the country, but in the current rental car climate, I’m not complaining. Hopefully you can get back to Hawaii soon :)
