Will Southwest Airlines Add Island-Hopping Flights in Hawaii?

Southwest Airlines heads for Hawaii, but it won’t be a vacation. Once Southwest Airlines starts flying to Hawaii next year, it may well add a compelling wrinkle to its schedule: flights between the islands. Southwest Airlines is deciding whether to include some in-state travel along with its trans-Pacific routes, which the company plans to offer starting next year. Andrew Watterson, the Southwest Airlines executive who oversees revenue and is in charge of cracking the Hawaii nut financially, worked at Hawaiian for three years and knows the market well.

Here’s the Bloomberg article that explains it all. Having lived in Hawaii, I can attest to the greater need for inter-island flights whether you’re a Hawaii resident or like 30% of the people getting off a long-haul flight, you connect to a flight to another island. And competition is good, so like most, if not all of you, I’m ready for Southwest Airlines to start flying to Hawaii!

Hawaiian Airlines Winter Sale Ends Tomorrow! Fares Starting at $397 Roundtrip

It used to be that any roundtrip fare under $300 from the west coast to Hawaii was an amazing deal. That dates me, for sure. Then it was any RT fare under $350 was “the deal”. Now it’s a fare under $400 that gets you thinking about jumping on board and heading to the islands. There are three times of the year I think are best to get away to Hawaii. Crowds have thinned out and prices have come down. This sale speaks to one of those times: after the New Year and before spring break. The good deals are mainly from the west coast cities to Maui and Oahu.

Best Places to Eat on Oahu: Part 2

As I mentioned in Part 1, on my most recent trip to Hawaii, I was curious to see if there had been any additions or changes to the local coffee scene. After all, it has been a while since I wrote about the best places for coffee in Hawaii. There are no newcomers to the coffee scene worth mentioning, however, it is worth noting that Honolulu Coffee Company, which is my favorite, has expanded. They have taken over two spots at the Sheraton in Waikiki that were previously used by Peet’s Coffee. Strange but true, Peet’s Coffee did not make it in Hawaii.

So instead of writing about coffee in Hawaii, I decided to ask some local friends on Oahu what their favorite restaurants were. I’ve lived in Hawaii, so I have a few of my own to mention, but let’s start with their recommendations first. In Part 1, I wrote about restaurants you can walk to if you stay in Waikiki. In Part 2, I’m writing about places outside of Waikiki, so let’s start with Chinatown. One of my friends mentioned how many dining options were cropping up in Chinatown. His two favorites are Senia and Fête. I haven’t tried these two places, but the menus look interesting and creative. Fête calls themselves “part Hawaii and part Brooklyn,” so that certainly sounds appealing :) I do trust my friend’s taste in good eats, so I’m letting you know about these places.

I’ve lived in Hawaii, so I have a few of my own to mention, but let’s start with their recommendations first. They did know that I’d be writing about their suggestions, so I asked them to keep in mind that many tourists don’t rent cars if they stay in Waikiki. We took this into account. Let’s start with the restaurants that are easily accessible if you stay in Waikiki.

Diamond Head Grill is for sure a local favorite. There’s not much space to sit and eat there. It’s best to take your food down to the beach or as a picnic in the park. Everyone, including me, loves their plate lunch. And their baked goods are good, too!

Hawaiian Airlines Adds 3 New Routes: PDX-OGG, OAK-LIH & LAX-KOA (Departing Early 2018)

Who doesn’t like hearing about MORE flights being added to Hawaii? And on top of that good news, Hawaiian Airlines has introductory price deals on these offers! What’s also nice is that these added flights are to Maui, Kona, and Lihue so you can try some of the other islands if you’ve already been to Oahu. My favorite island has always been Maui, and now that Hyatt opened up the Andaz Maui, it seems to be a lot of people’s favorite island too :)
