How to Load PayPal My Cash Cards to your PayPal Account

These cards can be found at CVS, grocery stores, gas stations, and other stores.  They have a similar look and feel to the Vanilla Reload Cards, but these can only be loaded to your PayPal account.  They do have the same $3.95 activation fee per card.  Here is the front and back of the PayPal My Cash Card:

Here is a copy of my receipt showing the $3.95 fee.  I was able to use my credit card to pay for the purchase.

You will need to go to https://www.paypal-cash.com/ and click the yellow PayPal Access button to get started.

Enter your PayPal account login information.

The PayPal My Cash Card has a $500 daily reload limit and a $4,000 calendar month reload limit.  Scratch off the back of the PayPal My Cash Card to reveal the 10 digit PIN and enter that into the text box.

Double check that the amount is correct and click the Yes, Load It Up button (such enthusiasm from PayPal).

Here is the confirmation screen showing the details of your recent reload.  It will also show you how much more you can load that day ($0 for me) and how much more you can load that month ($3,500 for me).  If you have another PayPal My Cash Card, you can load it to a different PayPal account or try again the following day.

Before loading the PayPal My Cash Card into my PayPal account, I had a current balance of $372.50.

After loading my PayPal My Cash Card, my PayPal balance went up $500 to $872.50.

That’s it.  If you have a PayPal Business Debit Card, you can use that card to reload your Bluebird Card ($400 daily debit transaction maximum) or you can earn cash back by loading your Bluebird Card online (link).

First of all, you can load a total of $8,000 per month on 2 Paypal accounts if you have a personal and business Paypal account. Also, I’ve been wondering about the Paypal logos on Vanilla Reloads and Moneypaks. Paypal is also present on the list of compatible prepaid debit cards on Reloadit’s website. Can you load a Paypal account using any of those 3 types of reload cards, and earn 1% back for liquidating it?

So the key to unloading your Paypal account is to have the Paypal biz debit card? Then you can load BB at WM, and I suppose you can link the debit card to your BB account and withdraw funds (up to $100 a day) that way too?

Any requirements for getting a PP biz debit card? I assume you have to have a biz PP account, but how can you tell if you’ve got that?

    Thanks.

Also was poking around my paypal account and it has an option to add funds from GreenDot reload cards. I’ve seen a pile of these at my local CVS’s too!

A PayPal business or premier account should qualify for the PayPal debit card. Basically if you can accept credit cards, you have 1 of those accounts. They should be able to upgrade a personal PayPal account or you can create a separate. I have a personal and business PayPal account.

Yes, you can load at Walmart, but you won’t earn cash back. But when you load $100 increments online, you will earn cash back.

The $3,000 spending limit is a daily spending limit, but you can only spend as much as you currently have in your PayPal account. You can also do $400 in ATM withdrawals per day.

If you play it safe, you should be fine. Things not to do:
1 – load up your PayPal account and immediately transfer the full amount to another PayPal account.
2 – load up your PayPal account and immediately withdraw/transfer the full amount to your bank account.
If you don’t do either of those 2 things, you should be fine. Plus, my 9+ years PayPal reputation should be enough to get me out of some jams.

You should spend it with ATM withdraws and debit card purchases. I would withdraw more than half. PayPal will close your account if you are taking advantage of their system.

          1. Beavis

Why would you withdraw more than half? Are you saying it looks like you are taking advantage of the system if you use it to make purchases mostly (instead of withdrawing the money at an ATM)?

    1. Shogo Garcia

Depending on the business you’re in, what funds you’re using to purchase your PayPal cards, and how you are using the funds once they’re in PayPal, you can deduct payments received this way from your 1099 as a business deduction. Just make sure to keep your records in order. However, it’s a bad idea to use your business PayPal account if the source of the funds is from your personal finances, especially if you’re generating any sort of profit from this and/or the transactions or withdrawals that you later make are for personal purposes. Just open a personal Paypal account instead.

hi Grant, when you withdrew money from your PayPal Debit Card at any ATM, does Paypal and/or bank ATM takes some fee??

        Reply
        1. Grant

Yes, I believe PayPal charges $1.50 and whatever the ATM owner charges you. However, if you use the card at a Post Office or grocery store, do the purchase as debit and ask for cash back. That should be free.

If you transfer the money immediately to your bank account just one time, will they freeze it? Is it possible to just use this method (buying a paypal card with credit card and then transferring the money to bank account) instead of using vanilla/bluebird? Or, if I’m constantly transferring money out they’ll freeze my funds? Thanks!

You might be able to do this a few (2-3) times, but PayPal will shut you down pretty quickly. Unless you have a long history with PayPal and use their service with Ebay and other websites, I wouldn’t recommend doing this for long.

So the best way to unload is by mixing it up, but cash back at grocery stores is best? Maybe send some to a spouse to withdraw to bank, pull some into your own bank, some thru an ATM….what else would work? Pulling out 4k a month at grocery stores could take awhile…

Grant — does CVS still allow you to use a credit card to purchase these since they stopped allowing the VRCs to be purchased with a credit card? If so, how do you take advantage of the $1,000 debit load per month on BB while still earning points?

I had the same problem and it took me forever to resolve it. They are totally unhelpful over the phone. Check to make sure your PayPal business debit card does not have a security block on it for unverified payments. Click on Profile, then click on “my selling tools” then click on “update” next to “Block payments”. Choose “ask me” for whether to block payments from items not sold on Ebay. The payment will now show up on your Paypal overview page and you can click accept to apply the funds. I hope this was helpful :-).

    1. Grant

I’m not sure, are you saying your PayPal account isn’t verified yet? Call PayPal and see if they can look into the problem.

In order to get a Pay Pal debit card, you have to have a Pay Pal business account right? And that has a monthly membership fee?

Is it possible to instead get a Pay Pal Prepaid Mastercard? That way I would be able to buy the My Pay Pal with credit card and use the Pay Pal prepaid card to load Bluebird?

    Thanks!

    Reply
    1. Grant

I believe you need a PayPal Business Account or a PayPal Premier Account. Neither account has a monthly membership fee. The only difference from a personal account is that you can accept credit and debit cards into your PayPal account, but you will pay the 2.9% plus 30 cent transaction fee. If your friends or family members are paying via bank transfer, echeck, or PayPal balance, you will not pay any fee.

The PayPal Prepaid MasterCard will not work if your goal is to load funds to Bluebird or Serve. You can use a credit card to buy PayPal My Cash Cards at CVS with a credit card though. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Ok, just so I am completely understanding. I can buy a PayPal My Cash card with a credit card and then use a debit card associated with either a business account or premiere account to then load it to my bluebird? And, my account won’t be flagged for that?

        Reply
        1. Grant

Hmm, that will work, but there is no guarantee that PayPal won’t flag your account. PayPal doesn’t make any money when you add funds to your PayPal account and withdraw funds with a PayPal Business Debit Card. I would tread lightly. You are better off loading your Bluebird Card with the PayPal Debit Card online. That will earn 1% cash back, whereas the other method won’t earn any cash back since it is a Debit transaction (PIN required).

You do not need a SSN to buy a PayPal My Cash Card. If you are talking about opening a PayPal Business Debit Card or a PayPal Extras MasterCard, you will probably have to supply your SSN to get approved. If you do not feel comfortable giving out that information, you do not need either of those cards.

I have used this method 3 or 4 different times now by buying at my local walgreens with no problems. However, I’m going out of town for a few days and will need to purchase the card at another walgreens in a different state. Is it possible their policy might be different and won’t let me use credit?

    Reply
    1. Grant

Yes, it is very possible their policy is different. From a store point of view, the cashier/manager might say no credit cards allowed. If you can convince them to try paying with a credit card, the purchase should get approved. Of course YMMV.

Very informative post & also Q&As. Interested in different unloading methods. Is there a limit on asking for cash back while shopping at grocery? Can I use my paypal debit card to buy money orders or load bluebird at walmart? I sell lots of items on ebay & I’m constantly withdrawing my paypal funds (like 2-3 times a week cos I don’t like money sitting around here). Will I be fine if I withdraw the funds to bank acc after my cash reload? Please share other simple unloading methods.. Thank you

    1. Grant

Yes, I think if you mix all those “unloading” methods together, you will be fine. Since you sell on Ebay, I think PayPal’s tolerance for withdrawing is much higher. I have been using PayPal for almost 10 years, so I have a really good history/relationship with them :)

One CVS location only had vanilla and green dot cards and they tried to load those for me but there wasn’t a credit card option. They said they recalled that some prepaid cards could be loaded with a credit card, but didn’t remember which. Another CVS had the PayPal MC re-loadable and she said they couldn’t load any prepaid cards with credit cards as a CVS policy.

Even if you can buy a PayPal My Cash Card, you will have to load funds to your PayPal account. If you are shopping on eBay, you can get an eBay gift card from many stores. You might need to use a PayPal account of someone 18 years or older.

Hey Grant, this is all very interesting. I recently just started to take advantage of the credit card/collecting miles and points thing and im super interested to learn more ‘unloading’ methods. Will doing the following raise any suspicion from PayPal?
Buying $4k worth of PPMCC throughout the month,
Pay rent via PP $500 (landlord accepts PP)
Withdraw via cash back $500 per time every two weeks at grocery stores (I honestly don’t know if $500 is too suspicious)
Also, I read that you wrote “PPMCC -> PayPal account -> Bluebird/Serve Card -> bill pay to credit card that bought the PPMCC” is that really a viable method?

I honestly haven’t tried the above yet except paying my landlord, but I am really curious. Thanks for the help! Sorry for the long post

    1. Grant

Good evening Ryan, thank you for the questions. Here are my thoughts:

    2. Buying $4k worth of PPMCC throughout the month – that is fine, you can only load $500 per day, so it would take you 8 days throughout the month to load all $4,000.
    3. Pay rent via PP $500 (landlord accepts PP) – sending money from your PayPal account to your landlord’s PayPal account is fine.
    4. Withdraw via cash back $500 per time every two weeks at grocery stores (I honestly don’t know if $500 is too suspicious) – I would do smaller amounts, probably around $200, mix up the withdrawal amounts.
    5. PPMCC -> PayPal account -> Bluebird/Serve Card -> bill pay to credit card that bought the PPMCC” is that really a viable method? – it is a viable alternative, granted you can only load $1,000 per month to Bluebird/Serve online with the PPBDC

Thank you for your prompt reply. One more thing, is it a good idea to load Bluebird and Chime to its max limit using PPdebitcard and then withdrawing it from an ATM every month?

        Reply
        1. Grant

You can use your PPBDC to load to your Chime Card, but chime will charge you 2.9% on each load. It is probably not worth the extra cost. If you buy 2 $500 PPMCCs, you will pay $7.90 in activation fees. Loading $1,000 to your Chime Card with your PPBDC will cost you another $29 on top of any ATM fees. Crunch the numbers and see if it makes sense to you. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Technically you could. You would need to have 3 PayPal accounts and purchase 6 $500 PayPal My Cash Cards. Load 2 PPMCCs to each PayPal account and then send the money to your main PayPal account to pay for your $3,000 purchase. If you have friends or family you trust, you can load the funds to their PayPal account and they can send the payment to your PayPal account.

It ultimately depends what you do with the funds in your PayPal account after you have combined all the funds into one PayPal account. If you end up paying for an Ebay item with your PayPal funds, PayPal will be very pleased and not flag your account.

PayPal really has no control over who redeems the PayPal MyCash Cards. I would proceed with extreme caution if you are buying the bike sight unseen. It is really easy to get ripped off if you send the code to someone and you never received the bike, you are totally unprotected.

The PPMCC $4,000 reload limit is per calendar month. You won’t earn cash back for a credit card payment using your PPBDC. I wouldn’t recommend doing that since you will probably get a warning email from PayPal.
