Updated 8/15/24 at 2pm PT: With 2 Citi ThankYou Points (TYPs) transfer bonuses set to expire in 2 days on August 17, I decided to take advantage of them before the deadline. As a reminder, here are the transfer bonuses:
-
- 25% transfer bonus to Air France / KLM Flying Blue (expires August 17, 2024)
- 20% transfer bonus to Wyndham Rewards (expires August 17, 2024)
I was lucky enough to snag one of the Super 8 promo packages (15,000 Wyndham Rewards Points for $8.88), so I currently had 45,000 Wyndham Rewards Points. I wanted 90,000 points for 6 nights at the 15,000 point pricing or 3 nights at the 30,000 point pricing (which I will probably use to book a 3 night Vacasa vacation rental up to $500 / night). Since I also have a Barclays Wyndham Rewards Earner Business Credit Card, I get a 10% discount on award bookings, so instead of 90,000 points, I only need 81,000 points. Here is the math: 81,000 points – 45,000 points = 36,000 points / 1.2 (for the 20% transfer bonus) = 30,000 points. I transferred 30,000 TYPs into 36,000 Wyndham Rewards Points and combined with my existing 45,000 points, so my new balance is 81,000 points.
I needed to book a hotel for 1 night and found a Radisson hotel for 25,000 Choice Hotels Points. I currently had 1,000 points, so I transferred 12,000 TYPs into 24,000 Choice Hotels Points (thanks to the 1,000 : 2,000 transfer ratio). 24,000 points + 1,000 points = 25,000 points.
Lastly, I wanted to use up the remaining expiring TYPs for a transfer to Air France / KLM to take advantage of the 25% transfer bonus. I had 43,370 expiring TYPs, so I transferred 44,000 TYPs into 55,000 Air France / KLM Flying Blue Miles which I hope to use for a business class award to / from Europe next Summer.
Good afternoon everyone. A few weeks ago, Laura transferred all 85K Citi ThankYou Points (TYPs) to my account in preparation of converting her Citi Strata Premier Credit Card into a no annual fee Citi credit card. Now I have 85K TYPs that I need to use / redeem within 90 days before they expire. In this post, I will walk you through the transfer process, show you how to find your points expiration date, and share my thoughts on how I plan to use the TYPs before they expire.
To get started, here is how you transfer your TYPs to another user. Sign into your TYP account, click on More Ways to Redeem, and click on Points Sharing. As mentioned above, once you transfer the TYPs, the recipient has 90 days to use the points before they expire. Each calendar year, you can transfer out up to 100K TYPs and you can receive up to 100K TYPs. You can transfer any amount of points from 1 point up to your entire balance. Lastly, you will not earn a 10% rebate by transferring points to another user if you have the Citi Rewards+ Credit Card.
To complete the transfer, enter the number of points to transfer to another user, then enter their first name, last name, and Citi TYP account number. If you run into any issues, you can call the phone number on the back of the Citi Strata Premier and the rep can process the transfer for you.
Laura was able to transfer 84,790 TYPs to my account and I received this confirmation email.
After she made that transfer, she saw that there were 580 points left. So she did a second transfer of TYPs to my account. My new balance was 136,123 points, but I have 85,370 points that expire in 90 days.
After the point transfers were completed, I signed into my TYP account, went to My Account, clicked on Points Summary, and then clicked View By List. This is where you can see your recent activity, including point transfers.
From the above image, you can click on the View Points Expiring In The Future link. On this page, I can see that the 85,370 points expire on 10/31/24, which is a few days later than 7/17/24 + 90 days (should be around 10/17/24 if my math is correct). Based on this info, Citi may extend the expiration date of points to the last day of the month. The remaining TYPs I earned on my various other Citi credit cards do not expire. Lastly, when redeeming TYPs, Citi will use TYPs from whichever account has points expiring first.
Here are the Citi TYP transfer partners, sorted alphabetically. Almost all have a 1,000 : 1,000 transfer ratio, but some have different ratios (shown in red).

To transfer points, click on More Ways to Redeem, then click on Points Transfer. I am in luck since 2 of my favorite transfer partners are currently running transfer bonuses:
- 25% transfer bonus to Air France / KLM Flying Blue (expires August 17, 2024)
- 20% transfer bonus to Wyndham Rewards (expires August 17, 2024)
I then checked all of Citi’s TYP transfer partners to see how many miles or points I currently have in each account. Here are my account balances, as of 7/30/24, sorted from high to low:
Citi ThankYou Points Transfer Partner | Transfer Ratio | Current Balance (7/30/24) |
JetBlue | 1,000 : 1,000 | 189,891 |

With my 85K expiring TYPs, here are my plans:
- Top off Wyndham Rewards account from 29,700 points to 60,000 points. I recently transferred 60K Wyndham Rewards Points to Caesars Rewards to cover my $600 hotel stay at the Paris Las Vegas (Caesars property), so I may do a similar redemption in the future. I could also book 4 nights at a Vacasa Vacation Rental for 60K points (or 54K points thanks to having the Barclays Wyndham Rewards Earner Business Credit Card). I would need to transfer 26,000 TYPs x 20% transfer bonus = 31,200 points + 29,700 existing points = 60,900 total points.
- I don’t have any plans to top off my JetBlue, Avianca, or Singapore accounts since I am trying to redeem those miles, not accrue more miles.
- Laura and I had a great time flying KLM Business Class from Stockholm (ARN) to Amsterdam (AMS) to Los Angeles (LAX) for 94K KLM miles each over the Summer, so I may transfer some TYPs to KLM to take advantage of the 25% transfer bonus.
- Lastly, I did redeem 100K Choice Hotels Points for 5 nights at Ascend Hotel Collection properties (part of Choice Hotels) in Helsinki and Stockholm and Citi TYPs transfer 1,000 : 2,000 to Choice Hotels, so I may transfer TYPs there, but that is the standard transfer ratio.
- I have no plans to make any transfers to Qantas, Etihad, Turkish Airlines, Leading Hotels of the World, or Virgin Atlantic at this time.
If you have any suggestions on what I should do with the 85K expiring TYPs, please leave a comment below. If you have any questions about transferring or redeeming TYPs, please leave a comment below. Have a great day everyone!
Turning it into $850 in cash is worthwhile. So is using points for a domestic Canadian flight, which usually is valued at more than 1 cent per mile and often approaching 3 cents per mile or point.
Use of points for business class is useful mostly if you would buy it if you didn’t have points or if you want a once in a decade experience.
Hi Derek, which airline would you recommend for booking a domestic Canadian flight? Citi TYPs do not transfer to Air Canada.
Would need further research but Air France or Cathay Pacific awards on Westjet is a possibility. I recently booked a Delta award on Westjet and found lots of availability as well as 30,000 miles needed for an economy class fare of C$1100, which is roughly US$800.
That’s good to know. I will keep Delta and Air France in mind the next time I book a WestJet flight. Thanks for sharing.
I know you don’t seem a fan of the concept but outside of Choice I’d likely look at Singapore. That’s largely because of the substantial difficulties in redeeming other miles to Asia in business class with decent-to-good award space. Barring that I’d go Flying Blue due to the bonus.
Thank you Christian. I had a Singapore Airlines business class award booked earlier this year, but I had to cancel that trip, so I’m still sitting on 65k Singapore miles. I’m hoping I can redeem them before the miles expire.
Why did Laura want to convert her card?
She wasn’t using her Citi Strata Premier and didn’t want to pay the $95 annual fee for another year, so she converted it to a Citi Double Cash.
