Good morning everyone. A few months ago, I decided to get a Peloton Bike Rental and *try* to get in better shape for 2023. The total monthly cost of the bike rental and all-access membership is $96.56 and this Mashable article explains more about the pros and cons of the rental program along with the cancellation period and buyout options. If you are considering buying a Peloton bike, you might be better off with the rent to own model. Anyway, let’s focus on which credit card is best for Peloton bike rental monthly subscriptions.
The first credit cards I looked into were the Chase Sapphire Reserve Credit Card and Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card. Chase has an official partnership with Peloton, but only purchases that are $250+ earn bonus points. My $96.56 monthly subscriptions would not earn bonus points.
With the Chase credit cards off the table, I looked into other credit cards to cover the $96.56 monthly subscription.
I first looked into the US Bank Cash+ Credit Card that offers 5% cash back at Gyms / Fitness Centers. Even though Peloton was not listed on the list of sample merchants, I decided to give it a chance since I saw Equinox and SoulCycle on the list.
Unfortunately, my $96.56 Peloton monthly subscription only earned 1% cash back. My $6.99 Discovery+ subscription earned 5% cash back.
I then decided to check out the Citi Custom Cash Credit Card that has a Fitness Clubs 5% cash back category. The terms do state that “fees associated with virtual services for home exercise equipment… or fitness streaming classes” are excluded. I wasn’t too confident, but gave it a chance.
Unfortunately, my $96.56 Peloton monthly subscription only earned 1% cash back.
I don’t really have any other credit card options to try, so I am wondering if anyone has any successful data points on which credit cards earn bonus points with Peloton. If you have any questions about the Peloton bike rental or the credit cards mentioned above, please leave a comment below. Have a great day everyone.
Wondering if you could prepay(in a lump sum payment) more than the $250 requirement on Chase cards?
Hi Geoff, that’s a good idea, but I don’t see any way to make a bulk or prepaid payment to Peloton.
Given their precarious financial position these days I’m sure they’d be happy to get some extra cash now instead of later. Also, a prepay would, in theory, make the member a “stickier” user. All subscription services love that:)
Yes, very true.
Hyatt credit card 2x fitness doesn’t work either
Hi Kim, thanks for the datapoint on the Hyatt CC not earning 2x with Peloton.
With an Amex Plat (assuming you already can cover the fee with other benefits) you can get a SoulCycle for $1,200 and only pay $15 a month for access (as you get a $300 annual credit). Within 13 months, you’re ahead with the SoulCycle v Peloton.
You make a good point, but I only have the AMEX Business Platinum, which doesn’t come with the SoulCycle credit.
Use a Chase Ink Business Cash to get 5x @ office supply stores and buy Visa/MC gift cards to use for the subscription. The only downside is the max value of the cards is $200 so you would have to change the card being billed every other month.
Hi Nick, that’s a great idea. I haven’t tried to see if VGC or MCGC work online, but I’m sure they would.
Bank of America’s Customized Cash Rewards credit card has an Online Shopping 3% cash back category. Peloton subscriptions are included, with virtually anything else you shop online.
If you become a Preferred Rewards member with them, e.g. by moving investment accounts to Merril, you can get another 75% bump to your 3% cash back, for a 5.75% total.
Hi Mimi, thank you for sharing that tip on the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards Credit Card and Online Shopping category. I no longer have that credit card, but I have the business version, but that does not have the Online Shopping category. What I’ve done lately is buy $200 VGC or $200 MCGCs when they are on sale at Staples and Office Depot, that gets me 2 months of service for each $200 GC and I earned 5x Chase Ultimate Rewards points for the purchases.
You can get 3% cash back if you use the American Express Blue Cash Everyday card. Peloton is in their 3% online retailer list.
Hi Kia, very cool, I have that card and didn’t realize that Peloton was 3% cash back as an online retailer.
Yes! I was pleasantly surprised. I am a new cardholder and decided to try it. It worked!
