These are NOT your Mother’s Fanny Packs! Check out my 5 Favorites!

It all started back in the early 1980’s. I was in Japan studying Japanese art and culture. I had an incredibly wonderful experience and came back to the states sporting a new look. No, I wasn’t wearing a kimono. But I was wearing a fanny pack! It was a small one and made of beautiful smooth black leather. Everyone in Japan wore one. But not in the States. Back then, almost no one had seen a fanny pack, much less was wearing one. I got all kinds of questions about where I got it. And lots of people thought it looked funny. Back then, women were still carrying purses the size of carry-on luggage, and men kept bulging wallets, a la George Costanza, in their rear pants pocket!

But I loved my fanny pack and wore it everywhere. A few years later in the 1990’s, it seemed like everyone was sporting a fanny pack. And then the fad died. For years, I never saw people wearing them. But now they seem to be back in style again. Some people call them lumbar bags, some call them hip packs, and I’ve heard others calling them waist packs. But to me, they are all fanny packs!

These days I mostly wear one for hiking and taking long walks. But they sure have become more versatile and popular. And throwing a small one in my luggage is a given, seeing as how when getting to know a new city, I love to walk long distances or go out for a run. Whether you want to carry a snack, pack your phone, stash hydration, or speed through airport security, a fanny pack helps you do it all without the hassle of shoulder straps or unreachable zippers.

Sure, using a fanny pack can be nerdy, but in a good way. They are not for everyone, but do have a certain appeal. I especially recommend them to my health/fitness clients who have shoulder or neck issues. It can feel like such a relief to take the weight of a backpack off your shoulders. That’s what actually got me thinking about writing this post and recommending some different types of fanny packs. In talking with my clients, I realized anyone who travels might be interested in knowing about the best fanny packs, whether they use them when they travel or at home. Continue reading

Part 6: Interview with a Professional Uber/Lyft Driver – Why Uber Now Supports Multiple Stops in the App

Here at TWG, we have our Uber insider, Harry Campbell. Whenever there’s something about Uber we want to know or understand better, he’s the man! Recently, Uber started allowing multiple stops, so I thought I’d reach out to Harry and get his take on this. I asked him a few questions:

  • Why did it take Uber this long to have this feature?
  • Will it benefit the drivers?
  • What’s your general take on this addition and Uber these days?

PSA: You Don’t Need to Decline Insurance for Credit Card Car Rental Coverage to Apply

One of my favorite benefits of many credit cards is that they offer car rental insurance coverage. Exact details vary by card, but no matter how you look at it, it’s a money saver if you rent cars, even just occasionally. One of the requirements in order to take advantage of your credit card car rental insurance coverage is that you need to decline the coverage offered by the car rental company. In practice, this is usually pretty straightforward, but some countries have the insurance built into the car rental rate due to legal requirements. One such example is Italy.

Have you Ever Gotten Lost in Venice? Bet it Didn’t Cost you a Marathon!

Have you ever gotten lost while on foot in a city? Sure you have! And some cities are more confusing than others to navigate on foot. New York City… easy. Rome… not so easy. Venice, Italy… whoa, who hasn’t gotten lost there? And not just wandering through the canal streets, but the whole city boggles the mind. Here’s a great story that intersects a few of my passions. As a long-time running coach and long-time lover of Italy, and having recently been to Venice, I can feel for the elite runners who this past weekend got lost during the Venice Marathon. I can also cheer for the Italian fellow who was able to take advantage of the situation and win the marathon. It’s been 22 years since an Italian won the race. See for yourself. It’s a fun story!

Say Hi to Grant at the Chicago Seminars Travel Conference this Weekend (October 20-22)

Good afternoon everyone.  This weekend, October 20-22, I will be at the world famous Chicago Seminars in beautiful Chicago Elk Grove, Illinois (near Chicago O’Hare International Airport).  I love going to travel conferences, especially the Chicago Seminars.  It is great to see so many familiar friends, both readers and bloggers alike.  I will be there from Friday afternoon through Sunday evening wearing my Travel with Grant shirt.  If you see me, please stop by and say hi.

Every year, I go to several travel conferences and wear my Travel with Grant shirt, so I am very easy to spot.  But I always get emails the Monday after the event saying something along the lines of, “I saw you at the travel conferences and wanted to say hi, but I was too shy.”  Please don’t do that, if you see me, or any other travel blogger that you recognize, please stop and say hi.  We are there to meet and talk to you.  You flew or drove all the way to the travel conferences, so you just have to go the last 5-10 feet and make an introduction.  Trust me, it is worth the initial awkwardness (everyone feels like that at their first travel conference).

While you are there, keep a lookout for this guy pictured below.  His name is Ray and he knows a thing or two about churning credit cards. I hope to see some of you this weekend.  Safe travels everyone.
