(Hat Tip to Nigel for the email)
First off, I certainly like the design of the card, looks very regal and fancy. Here are the main points that most of you probably care about:
- 50,000 Marriott Rewards points after your spend $1,000 in the first 3 months
- 1 Free Night Certificate (category 1-4) after account approval
- 1 Free Night Certificate (category 1-5) every year you pay the annual fee
- $99 annual fee, waived for the first year
- 5x on all Marriott purchases
- 2x on all purchases at office supply stores, restaurants, car rental agencies, airline tickets purchased directly from the airline, cellular phone, landline, Internet, and cable TV services (Chase Ink Bold/Plus categories, hmm…)
- 1x on all other purchases
- Cardholders receive 15 Elite credits every year = automatic Marriott Silver Elite Status
- Earn one additional Elite credit for every $3,000 spent (see elite tiers here)

P.S. no affiliate link, just thought you might like the card. I’ll recommend this credit card to my parents who are big fans of Marriott (also time share owners).
what do you think of it as a value? for instance compared to the chase Hyatt card?
There are 2 things to consider: how much are 50,000 Marriott points worth? Maybe $200-$300. How much is a category 1-4 hotel worth? Maybe $100-$200. No annual fee the first year is nice. Then paying the annual fee the second year and getting a free night at a category 1-5 essentially cancel each other out. You might come out ahead depending on where you stay. Overall good value. Compared to the Chase Hyatt credit card? That’s a tough choice. Either one would be a good choice.
I can only see getting this after you’ve gotten a Sapphire Preferred, Ink Bold, Ink Plus, Freedom, and a personal Marriott card. Other than a way to get an additional 50k bonus points I’d probably not use it again. UR points can be earned easier/faster with Inks. And in planning an upcoming Hawaii trip it became obvious that booking Marriott stays with UR points through Chase UR travel portal is far more efficient use of points. (Five nights at the Ritz-Carlton on Maui was 130,000 UR points through Chase vs 240,000 Marriott points.)
Effectively you can earn a Marriott stay 2.5 times faster with an Ink card than the Marriott card.
Typ0 above – five nights at Kapalua Ritz-Carlton was 150,000 points, not 130,000.
Great info!
Yes, agreed, this is not a great card on its own, but if you stay at Marriotts frequently, it might work for you. Chase UR Mall has really good deals if you redeem them for travel.
Hey Grant, one more time about the Discover shopping portal. When I go to Shopdiscover, it indicates you need to have a Discover card in order to get the basic 5% from Staples, i.e., you cannot shop that portal with another card and get the bonus percentage.
How does it work?
When you log into the Discover portal, you have to use your Discover username and password to log in. The only way to get a Discover account is to have a Discover credit card. That might be your problem.
Great, thanks for posting! :)
By adding the points from this card + 70K points from the personal Marriott card + 70-140K from the RC card (depending on your offer) … you are that much closer to achieve that Hotel + Air Package award: http://www.marriott.com/rewards/usepoints/morepack.mi
Good point. Those are good deals but I never have that many Marriott points. I’m sitting on only 5k points
Personal card is better value, 70k sign up bonus and lower annual fee (you’ll want to keep this card for the free night certificate). You only loose out on earning bonuses at office supply stores, but you should be using a different card for this anyway.
I didn’t realize that the personal card had a lower annual fee, good point Will.
Can you provide the link to that personal card with 70k bonus? thanks in advance.

Grant, how would this card compare with the AMEX Hilton HHonors credit card?

There are 4 different Hilton credit cards (2 from Citi and 2 from American Express). The top 2 choices are the Citi Hilton Reserve vs. American Express Hilton Surpass. Both cards offer Hilton Gold Elite Status. The AMEX offers 12x at Hilton but has forex fees. The Citi offers 10x at Hilton but has no forex fees. If you travel internationally, the Citi card is better.
its worth for Cat one stay and combine with 4 +1 =7 nights on this card. there are a couple Cat 1 properties in China.
