35% Off SPG Points – Maybe for the Last Time?

Starwood Preferred Guest is back with their offer to buy SPG points for a 35% discount now through May 31, 2018. Recently, I told you about some of the new benefits that will come to those of us who hold SPG cards now that Marriott’s plans for the SPG program start in August. And one thing I think we’ve all learned from the blending of the programs is to maximize our opportunities before they disappear. Though for now the programs do remain independent, buying SPG Starpoints could be one of those fading opportunities.

But there is still time to enjoy a 35% savings on Starpoints right now! Over the years I’ve been a buyer of Starpoints and have always, whether using them for hotels or transferring them to airlines to book award flights, gotten greater value out of the points than the cost to purchase them. If you are looking to make some Starwood reservations and need to top off your account, or if you have a paid stay coming up, check out this opportunity to purchase Starpoints at 35% off.

With 35% off, points will cost you 2.275 cents per point when you purchase them.

There’s always been great value in SPG points, and many would say come August that value increases. Since SPG points transfer to Marriott points in a 3:1 ratio, this is also the equivalent of buying Marriott points at 0.76 cents a piece. And, with many different airline transfer options, you’ll still be able to convert your SPG points into airline miles at a 1:1 ratio, with a 5,000 mile bonus every 20,000 SPG points you transfer.

Bottom Line

SPG points are definitely some of the most valuable points around. Seeing if you can save money with the promotion on hotel stays you’re already planning could work out when you have the Starpoints. You can buy SPG points with a 35% discount here.

This promotion runs through May 31, 2018, so there is still time to take advantage of it. SPG allows members to buy up to 30,000 points per calendar year. They allow you to transfer points between household members who have the same address for at least 30 days. Always make math your friend and if you’ve got some redemptions in mind, see if it’s worth purchasing some points.

Will you be picking up some final SPG points with this 35% off sale?

Can’t. Already hit the annual purchase limit. For those that do buy, be sure to purchase using TopCashback for 1.5% and pay with the SPG Amex for double points on the purchase price.

For those of us currently without an SPG card (maxed the bonus many times), is there any advantage to buying SPG points with a MR card?

Great question, Rick. You don’t need an SPG card to buy the miles. I’ve bought SPG points and put the purchase on other cards when that choice worked better for me. If you have a plan for the points and are not maxed out for the yearly purchase of 30k points, then whichever card you want to use is fine. Remember though that if you buy through points.com it is not a travel bonus category on the MR card. Hope that’s what you were asking. Thanks for reading!

Wait, what? I bought 30,000 for myself and had my husband buy 30,000 for his account last time. Are you saying I can buy another 30k and gift to him and he can buy 30k to gift to me?!?

Can anyone confirm that they have bought the 30k and then received more as a gift in one calendar year? This is on their terms website:
How many Starpoints may I buy for others?
A Starwood Preferred Guest account may receive up to a maximum of 30,000 Starpoints per account per calendar year, whether purchased by the member him/herself or received as a gift from another member; therefore, you may not buy more than 30,000 points for any single Starwood Preferred Guest account. If your purchase for another account exceeds their 30,000 Starpoint purchase/gift maximum, the recipient will be unable to claim this gift until the next calendar year. There are no refunds in these instances.
