Drop App Devaluation: Changes to Gift Card Redemptions (Must Shop through App)

Updated at 2:10pm PT on 11/14: After I made a $1 Groupon purchase through Drop, I earned Drop Points and unlocked the gift card redemptions.  Scroll to the bottom of the post for more info.

Good morning everyone.  I checked my Drop account yesterday and noticed a change to the Redeem Rewards screen.  Listed at the top of the screen is a message regarding $5-$25 gift cards.  I clicked on the message and learned that rewards between $2 and $25 are locked unless you make a purchase with the Drop app.  I currently only earn Drop points when I make purchases with my linked credit cards.  This is bad news for users who do not use the Drop app for shopping, but only for card linked purchases.

I looked on the Drop website and found this FAQ about rewards under $30.  It says that this page was updated on Tuesday at 1:43pm.  Just like the app said, the FAQ states that you need to make a purchase through the Drop app in order to redeem for rewards under $30.

Back on the Drop app, I scrolled down to the $20 and $25 rewards section.  There is a big gray padlock on all the locked redemptions.  When you click on a gift card, you are shown the same screen as earlier.

I looked on the Drop app for the cheapest merchant to shop at and found Groupon.  I clicked the Add button on the bottom and then clicked the Book Now button.

I was taken to the Groupon app where I saw a small message at the top of the screen stating that I am earning Drop points.  I also looked for the cheapest thing I could find and settled on a $1 Groupon from Kilham Farm.  I made the $1 purchase and hope the order posts to Drop soon.  I should earn 20 Drop points and unlock redemptions under $30.

Updated at 2:10pm PT on 11/14:

A few hours after making my Groupon purchase through Drop, I earned 20 Drop Points and unlocked the gift card redemptions.

I currently have enough Drop Points for a $15 reward, but I am going to wait until I have enough Drop Points to get a $20 Amazon eGift Card.

If you have any questions about this new Drop change, please leave a comment below.  Have a great day everyone.

They’ve devalued this even further. I have shopped through the portal, but I noticed recently, the minimum is $25. Sure enough, the FAQ you link now starts: “Gift cards $25 and up, are available if you’ve shopped through Drop in the last 12 months.” It’s still $30 minimum without portal shopping.

Oh dang, that’s not good. It takes me a really long time to rack up that much cash back with Drop just by using their card linked offers.

Good questions. I just checked the Drop redemption options and don’t see Amazon listed at all. Amazon might / might not come back as a redemption offer :(

When did they get rid of the “top 5” bonus places? It’s been awhile since I used the app but recently no longer working and getting back into the savings apps. I used to have the top few places at the top and would get points for swiping our cards. (Target, McDonald’s Dunkin etc). Can you only earn now from doing the bigger rebates??

Great question, I am not sure. I haven’t used Drop in a while so I am not sure when they removed the “top 5” bonus places.
