If you ever decide to switch from your American Express Serve Card to a Bluebird Card or Target Redbird Card, you will first have to close your American Express Serve Card. Follow this tutorial and your Serve Card will be closed in a few minutes. The first thing you need to do is log into your Serve online account and click the profile link.
On your profile page, scroll all the way down to the bottom and click the Close Account button.
Select a reason from the drop down menu, enter a reason in the text box and click the Close Account button.
Your Serve Card has been successfully closed. You have 90 days to log into your Serve Card and view old monthly statements.
If you try to log back into your Serve online account, you will see the following message. If you decide to reopen your Serve Card, call the Serve Customer Service number at 1-800-954-0559.
You will also receive a confirmation email from American Express regarding your closed Serve Card.
If you plan on opening a Bluebird account or Target Redbird account, you should be able to apply for the new card right away. If you have any questions, please leave a comment below.

Is Redbird everywhere now, like in Seattle?
Redbird is still in limited areas. I haven’t been to Seattle lately, so I am not sure if they have Redbird Cards in Seattle-area Target stores.
Is today a good time to close Serve? I already got a temp card with a load of $500. I heard somewhere that we can load upto $1500 on temp card. How long does it take for the permanent card to arrive?
If it comes this month – that’s great. If not, then I will try early next month.
It is only good to close a Serve Card if you have plans to open a Bluebird or Redbird Card. I wouldn’t close my Serve Card without having a plan to get one of the other cards.
Why not if I want to close my account whats the big deal

Is Redbird finally available in California??
No, I got my Redbird Card from a recent visit to Colorado. You can also buy the temp Redbird Cards on Ebay for around $30. Not sure if that is worth it though.
I got mine for about $30 from Ebay and it was worth it for me. By the time Redbird flies to California it may be too late due to some possible MS crack down by Target. Get a Redcard that is pre-loaded at least a penny. That way it’s one less hurtle to get full activation of the permanent card. The clerks in Californa Targets are pretty clueless on the Amex version and may not know how to activate it at all.
I’m glad you were able to buy a Redbird on Ebay. Loading the Redbird in CA is pretty easy, most cashiers can figure it out.

Yes, you can withdraw the funds to your bank account or pay a bill to liquidate your account.
How do I get the money that is in my account if I want to close my account??
Withdraw the money in your account to your bank account. After that, you can close your Serve card online.
How do you close your account with out a card number? I have zeroed out my account and there is no online option to close. When I call it asks for my card number which I do not have (never activated and probably got cut up a couple years ago).

I’m in the same situation, trying to cancel my card. No, I can’t say I lost it, because I have to log into the site to do that. I don’t remember my credentials, and have no idea of where my card is. I just want the account closed! The way I came to have a Serve card was about 4 or 5 years ago when I bought my phone, the card came as a bonus with it. I used the money in it right away for an Otter case for my then new phone. I’ve been trying to cancel the card ever since. I have written twice to the St. Petersburg, FL, address, to no avail. I have tried many, many times to call and cancel the card. Today, I spent about 2 hours on the phone, trying to connect with someone who could help. The AE Serve customer support number (800)954-0559 is automated only! There is no choice to cancel account, or to leave a message for someone to call back. There is only if you are an existing member (enter card number), or activate a card. There is no representative available. When I called a regular American Express number, the reps tried to help, but all they managed to find is the dratted 800-954-0559 automated line. The reps in the regular AE cards number see verbiage that the 0559 line has live representatives, but that is not true. At least not all the times when I tried to call them.
Please help me close this thing.

Can you ask for a replacement card and then use the card info to log into your Serve account and then close your Serve Card? Crazy idea but it just might work.

That is a good idea, but every one of these ideas falls into the you either need to know your credentials to log in to the site, or know your card number for the site or the phone. If you forgot your credentials, and want to reset them, you need your card number. Aaaaarrrrggghhhhh. If I could get a live person on the phone, I’m sure we would be able to resolve this.

No, I cannot move on when there is an account on my name that I will never use. I want that line closed, and will continue to pursue that however frustrating the journey may be.

No, the Serve card is not a credit card so it will not affect your credit score / report.

If your Serve card is closed, there is nothing you can do. Just transfer all the funds off your Serve card and do not load any more funds to the card.

After you get the Serve Card, go online and cancel it or call the number on the back of your Serve Card.

I understand. I would keep your Serve account open until your disputes are resolved, then you can close your Serve Card.
