(Hat Tip to Doctor of Credit’s post)
Good evening everyone, there is no doubt in my mind that I love Chase and Chase loves me. I have quite a few credit cards (both personal and business) with Chase. I always want the latest card design (remember the new Citi American Airlines Executive Credit Card? or the new Chase Ink Bold/Plus Business Cards?) and am a big fan of EMV (aka Chip and Signature) credit cards. After reading Will’s recent post about the Chase United Airlines MileagePlus Credit Card adding EMV chips to their card, I decided to call Chase.
Quick Tip: I have said this before, but if you want the absolute best customer service, call the Chase / JP Morgan Ritz-Carlton Credit Card department (assuming you have the Chase Ritz-Carlton Credit Card). They answer your call in under 10 seconds and can help you with any Chase personal or business credit card. The Chase Sapphire Preferred team is a close runner up for best customer service at Chase. Never call the phone number on the back of your Chase credit card unless you like listening to hold music. #youhavebeenwarned
Side Note: I am really annoyed at US Bank. I called them this morning and waited 10+ minutes for a rep. I told the rep I was planning on making a large purchase at Target and to put a spending notification on my US Bank FlexPerks Credit Card. Fast forward to Target and my Redbird reload is declined twice. After using a different credit card, I called US Bank again and waited another 10 minutes. I then asked the rep why US Bank blocked my charge even after I called US Bank earlier in the day. I was told that Target is a high risk store (I have forgiven you, Target, but some banks still have a grudge against you). Based on that information, there is no way to override the fraud detection even after calling. #USBankislame
Anyway, back to the original point of this post. I took the list from Doctor of Credit’s post (link) and called Chase. I asked if there was an EMV (Chip + Sig) version of the Chase United Airlines MileagePlus Credit Card. She said yes and is sending a new credit card my way.
I then asked if any of my other Chase credit cards had EMV and I went through my credit card list with her. Yes to the Chase Freedom, yes to the Chase Southwest Airlines Plus, and yes to the Chase Southwest Airlines Premier.
All Chase hotel credit cards (with the exception of IHG) have EMV chips, so no need to request new Hyatt, Marriott, and Ritz-Carlton. It sounds like all Chase business credit/charge cards have EMV as well.
I want to get this list updated and verified, so if you have one of the following credit cards with an EMV chip, please let me know and I will update this post.
- Chase Slate
- Chase Freedom (requested, coming in the mail shortly)
- Chase Sapphire (Chip + Sig)
- Chase Sapphire Preferred (Chip + Sig)
- Chase Ink Bold (Chip + Sig)
- Chase Ink Plus (Chip + Sig)
- Chase Ink Cash (Chip + Sig)
- Chase Ink Classic
- Chase British Airways (Chip + Sig)

If you have any questions, please leave a comment below. Have a great evening everyone!
I just called and requested that they upgrade my Freedom. They said they could not offer me the chipped card yet, because they have to be upgraded in stages. I explained that I would be travelling to Europe next month and would like to use the card while I was there. She apologized for the inconvenience and still refused to upgrade me.
That is a bummer, sorry they could not offer the Chase Freedom with EMV chip. Another approach: you could say your current Chase Freedom is damaged and they will send you a replacement card (hopefully the new EMV version).
Good call!!! I’ll give it a try in a few days.
Good luck!
I was loading my redbird with US Bank CC yesterday as well, same thing happened to me even when I had someone from fraud department with me as I was loading. They said the even amount (1000)looks to suspicious and that’s why it was declinded. I tried it with 998.50 the next time and it went through, then I whipped out my Radisson card and that went through without a hitch.
I’ve been on loud speaker with US Bank as my charge gets declined. Fraud department is not very useful. Maybe I’ll have to try an odd amount (makes my accounting system look ugly)
I do 2 odd numbers slightly less than 1000 and 1 a little over 500 to make it 2500… No more difficult than 2x 1000 and 500..
I still need to try that strategy. What credit cards do you use?
Credit card companies are really benevolent in terms of miles and other benefits in US and Europe. This concept in not popular here in India. Here the cards offer too less benefits. I don’t know why. Coming back to security of cards, I really like Visa Signature as they provide anti theft coverage and the user does not have any responsibility of fraud transaction. I really appreciated VISA when these kind of transactions happened in my account and they didn’t charge. They do come with chip + pin security.
Thank you for sharing Pooja, I am a big fan of Visa Signature credit cards. Hopefully India starts adding a few new travel reward credit cards.
My Sapphire (not Preferred) has a chip. I received it in November when I downgraded from the Preferred.
Thank you Max, I appreciate the data point. How do you like the Chase Sapphire?
Sapphire is good for the 2X on restaurants. That’s the only thing I really use it for. I didn’t spend enough on Travel to justify the $125 AF for the Preferred, so I downgraded.
That makes sense, the only problem with the Chase Sapphire is that you don’t have access to Chase Ultimate Reward transfer partners. Do you typically redeem your points for cash back?
I also have an Ink Plus, which I use for my cell phone & internet bills, and for buying gift cards at Office Supply stores. I also have a Freedom. So my plan is to keep the Ink Plus as a destination for the points from my Freedom and Sapphire.
Excellent, I have the same plan. Funnel all the points through the Chase Ink Bold/Plus.
Chase just told me that chip is not available for United Explorer.
Interesting, did you call the direct Chase United Airlines MileagePlus customer service phone number? I wonder if the JP Morgan Ritz-Carlton team has special access to request new Chip + Sig cards.
United Explorer World Elite MasterCard doesn’t have it yet, only the Visa Signature.
The Ink Cash has it.
Thanks for the data points, I will add those to the list.
I sent a private message to chase about my southwest card. they responded that it wasn’t available. they also included a list of cards that did have a chip. This list of course included the southwest card… I replied saying that my card was on the list. I just received a response saying that I have to wait for a response from an “Escalation Specialist”
“Though the card you have now doesn’t have a chip-enabled
version, we’re writing to provide you with a list of our
products that do.
We currently offer the following chip-enabled cards:
* Chase Sapphire Preferred
* Hyatt Credit Card
* Marriott Premier
* Ritz-Carlton Rewards
* British Airways
* Marriott Rewards
* Chase Sapphire
* Chase Freedom
* Fairmont
* Slate
* Southwest Airlines Visa “
Thanks for sharing, Randy. Hopefully the “escalation specialist” can read the list and send you a new EMV chip card. I will add the Fairmont credit card to the list.
The Chase Amazon card now shows with EMV chip on Chase’s website, so it’s likely they have implemented chip on that. Anyone can confirm?
That’s what I heard. I used to have that card way back in the day.

Question: When you ask Customer Service for a new card with a chip & pin, do they change your actual credit card number to a new one? I have so many automatic payments using the cards that it is a pain make all those calls to change the CC#. Anybody know?
The numbers are exactly the same, including the expiration date and CVV code.
Datapoint: My Sapphire (nor Preferred) came with the same expiration date and CVV code.
Thank you for sharing, I had the same card number and everything on mine as well.
I called in today 4/20/2015. United Visa Card from Chase is available with the EMV chip.
Thank you for the update. I hope your new card arrives soon.
I just called my local Chase rep and he said that Chase is sending us a new United Mileage Plus Club card with a chip, and that we should get it in the next week. When I spoke to him, he said that it hadn’t been rolled out yet. I asked him to call about it anyway, and when he did, he was very surprised and said that Chase had just sent a notification to all bankers yesterday (4/22/15) announcing that the United Mileage Plus cards were being re-sent with chips.
Interesting. I don’t have the Club card but I’m sure it will look cool with Chip and Sig.
I called Chase last week, and received my chipped United MileagePlus Club visa today. The agent said the cards are in “limited supply”… but obviously they will send it if you request/insist
Gotcha, thanks for the update. Did you request the new card or did Chase send it to you automatically?
I received my Chip & Sig Chase United Club Card last week (week of June 8th). Looks like the rollout is proceeding.
Thanks for the update. I haven’t received my new Chase United MP CC yet, but hopefully soon.
