Award Wallet Feature I Wish Existed: Keep Checking for Account Balance Changes

Good afternoon everyone.  I dreamed this up a few days ago and thought it was worth sharing to see if anyone else would find this feature useful.  If you guys like this idea, I will share it with my friends Howie and Alexi at Award Wallet (sign up for your free Award Wallet account here).  Here is an example use case:  I needed to book a Singapore Airlines (SQ) award ticket for travel on United Airlines (UA).  I needed 35,000 SQ miles, but only had 744 SQ miles in my account.  Luckily, I have plenty of transferable point currencies, so I decided to transfer 25,000 Citi Thank You Points and 10,000 American Express Membership Reward Points to my Singapore Airlines account.  As I wrote in July 2015, transfer times from Chase UR, Citi TYP, AMEX MR, and SPG to SQ are not instant – most take ~24 hours to complete.

With that said, I made the transfers from Citi Thank You Points and American Express Membership Reward Points and then occasionally checked Award Wallet to see if the SQ miles posted.  Insert cheesy infomercial “THERE HAS GOT TO BE A BETTER WAY!”  Here is what the process currently looks like:

My Long Term Citi Credit Card Plans & Citi Forward to Citi Preferred Conversion

Good morning everyone. A few days ago, I received the following letter from Citi regarding my Citi Forward Credit Card.  The letter was similar to the letter posted on Doctor of Credit, but mine did not include a targeted spending offer.  I reached out to Citi on Twitter and asked if they could match me to the targeted offer.  Long story short, I spoke to a member of the Citi social media team and we went through a few options.  I will share what my long term plan is regarding the Citi Forward Credit Card conversion into the Citi Thank You Preferred Credit Card and share my plans for some of my other Citi credit cards.  Here is what the letter from Citi looked like:

  • Luke US: Dear Grant, I would really love to win this nice contest! I have 19k miles, and only need 1k miles to book my award trip to Europe and see my family! Thank you so very much!!
  • Ryan: Condor’s cheap SAN-FRA this summer! I flew it last summer—so convenient and cheap in Alaska miles!

Luke and Ryan, please check your email for an email from me regarding your Alaska Airlines account information.  Thank you and happy holidays everyone!

Good morning everyone. I can’t believe it is only 4 more days to Christmas – luckily, I am in the giving mood.  A few days ago, Alaska Airlines sent me an email telling me that I could transfer Alaska Airlines miles for free, due to my Alaska Airlines MVP Gold elite status.  There really isn’t much need for this, since you can always book an award ticket for someone else with Alaska Airlines miles, but I did find a need.  My dad hasn’t flown Alaska Airlines in awhile, so I got an email from Award Wallet telling me his Alaska Airlines miles were going to expire in a few months.  Thanks to this promo, I transfered a few Alaska Airlines miles to his account to reset his expiration date.  After that, I thought I could help a few other people who need 1,000 Alaska Airlines miles to top up for an award ticket.  Keep reading to find out more…

How to Find Out When Southwest Airlines Travel Funds Expires Before Cancelling Reservation

Good morning everyone, I am on a bit of a Southwest Airlines kick lately.  Luckily (or unluckily), this is my last Southwest Airlines post of the year.  In the last few days, I wrote the following Southwest Airlines blog posts:

In today’s post, I will show you how to find out when your Southwest Airlines travel funds expire before you cancel your Southwest Airlines reservation.  You might be wondering why you would ever want to do this, so let me give you an example.  Let’s say you have travel funds that expire on April 20, 2018 (from a previously cancelled Southwest Airlines reservation), but you already have a Southwest Airlines reservation for April 13, 2018.  Wouldn’t it be great to see when the travel funds linked to your April 13 reservation expire so you could decide if you are better off cancelling your April 13 reservation and rebooking the same exact flight with the Southwest Airlines travel funds that expire on April 20?  You could then use the travel funds from the original April 13 reservation for another Southwest Airlines flight in the future.  In a sense, you are swapping travel funds that expire far in the future with travel funds that expire sooner.  Remember, if you do not use travel funds before their expiration date, they become worthless, so it is always good to use your travel funds before they expire worthlessly.  Also remember that travel funds can only be used for the passenger who they were originally booked for, so you cannot gift travel funds to others.

How to Add a Companion to an Existing Southwest Airlines Reservation

Good morning everyone.  A few days ago, I shared how long it took for your Southwest Airlines Companion Pass to post to your account after you made your first purchase.  Yesterday, my girlfriend received a letter from Southwest Airlines with her new Companion Pass card.  The card is just for looks and doesn’t really do anything, but it is still cool to have.  This is what the Southwest Airlines Companion Pass welcome letter looks like.  In this post, I will show you how to add your Southwest Airlines Companion to an existing Southwest Airlines reservation.
