My Credit Card Retention Calls for AMEX Business Platinum, Chase IHG & Chase Hyatt

Good morning everyone, happy Friday!  I apologize for not writing much lately, but I do have a few posts in the pipeline, they just take a while to get all the necessary details and dates.  Anyway, my December credit card statements just closed and a few of my credit cards had annual fees that posted.  Most of the time, I have already mentally decided if I will keep a credit card or cancel way before the annual fee posts, but even if I mentally decide to keep a credit card, I still call and see if there are any retention offers available.  It never hurts to call, the worst that can happen is that they say there are no offers, and if you never ask, you will never receive.  During this round of retention calls, I called regarding my American Express Business Platinum Charge Card, Chase IHG Rewards Credit Card, and Chase Hyatt Credit Card.  Here is how those retention offer calls went…

Retention Call 1 and 2: American Express Business Platinum Charge Card

I called American Express on Wednesday afternoon and told the rep that the $450 annual fee just posted on my American Express Business Platinum Charge Card and I wanted to close the card, but before I close the card, I wanted to see if there were any retention offers available.  She put me on hold for a few minutes, but then said that the department that was responsible for retention offers was really busy and that I should call back at a later time.

I then called back Thursday morning and told the second rep the same spiel.  He put me on hold for a few minutes to check my offers and came back with no offers.  I told him I put a lot of spend on my no annual fee American Express Blue Business Plus Credit Card (true) and earned lots of Membership Reward Points on that card and put very little spend on my American Express Business Platinum Charge Card (true), so why did I need both cards?  I told him I get good value out of the $200 airline incidental credit and occasionally visit the Centurion Lounges, but that did not justify paying the $450 annual fee.  He asked me what type of offer I was looking for and I said statement credits to offset the annual fee.  He didn’t have any statement credit retention offers and said that I could redeem my Membership Reward Points for statement credits.  No… that was not what I wanted.  He said he would transfer me to that department and then I hung up in annoyance.  Ugg, I will hold on to this card until get another AMEX Plat.  I’m currently eyeing the 60,000 point signup bonus on the American Express Platinum Charge Card from Charles Schwab.

$10 Bonus for Adding Authorized User to Barclays Arrival Plus Credit Card (Targeted)

Good morning everyone.  I hope your weekend is going well so far.  Yesterday, I received an email from Barclays regarding my Barclays Arrival Plus Credit Card.  If I add an authorized user between December 1 and December 15, I will get a $10 statement credit.  You can only get 1 $10 statement credit.  I believe this offer is targeted, but if you have a Barclays Arrival Plus Credit Card, check your email and see if you received a similar email.  I have a few other Barclays credit cards, but I did not receive a similar offer on those credit cards.  I also have not used my Barclays Arrival Plus Credit Card in several months, so that might be another reason why I was targeted for this offer.

Free One Way Car Rentals from Saint Paul, Chicago & Boston to Several Cities in Florida

Good morning everyone, happy Saturday.  If you have any long road trips planned, please pay attention to this post.  TransferCar has just added 350 one way car rentals from Saint Paul, MN, Chicago, IL, and Boston, MA to various parts of Florida (Orlando, Miami, and Cape Coral).  Most of these one way car rentals (actually they are considered vehicle relocations) are free and some even provide gas credit.  I first wrote about TransferCar in February 2015, I documented my experience driving a TransferCar RV from Los Angeles to Denver, and shared the news that TransferCar launches service in Canada.  If you are interested in these car rentals, they are first come first serve.  I highly recommend the TransferCar team, they are very helpful and knowledgeable.

Tired of Wine? Check Out Jelly Belly & Budweiser Factory Tours Near San Francisco

Good morning everyone, happy (Cyber) Monday!  I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving Weekend and ate way more than you should have (just like me).  So… Jelly Belly Jelly Beans and Budweiser Beer, have those 2 companies ever been mentioned in the same sentence before?  Well today they have.  Over the weekend, my parents and brother were in town, so we decided to do some not-so-common things outside of San Francisco.  Our first stop was the Jelly Belly Jelly Bean factory tour in Fairfield, CA.  Once inside, you can go on a free self-guided tour of the facility to see how the Jelly Belly Jelly Beans are made and packaged.  The tour has 18 videos that range from 30 seconds to 3 minutes and described the steps of the jelly bean making process.  We went on Saturday morning and unfortunately, the machines were not running, but the tour was still very informative and fun.  I had no idea how popular Jelly Belly Jelly Bean art was and there were many statues and portraits made out of thousands of jelly beans.

I took a picture of this poster so I could remember which Jelly Belly Jelly Bean looked and tasted like.  At the end of the tour, they gave everyone a free small bag of jelly beans.  During the production process, if a jelly bean is too small, too big, or misshapen, the jelly bean is rejected.  All those rejected jelly beans wind up in big 2 pound bags called Belly Flops.  Each bag costs $10 or you can get 5 bags for $30.  It is fun to see the interesting shapes of the jelly bean Belly Flops.  Along with making jelly beans, the factory makes other tyoes of candy treats.  The whole tour took us about an hour from start to finish.

Just down the street from the Jelly Belly Jelly Bean factory is a Budweiser Beer Brewery Tour in Fairfield, CA.  The tours cost $5 and include two 10 once samples of various beers brewed here (not just Budweiser and Bud Light).  On the day we were there, the beer making process was not running and the plant was being cleaned, but we did learn how the beer is made, stored, packaged, and served.  Our tour guide (Armando) was terrific, he knew everything and was very passionate about the beers made here.  I didn’t take any pictures inside, but the Clydesdale statue outside was cool.  The real Clydesdale horses visit this plant during spring time and it is a big celebration.  The entire tour lasted about an hour with a final stop at the bar for your second 10 once beer.  I was surprised to learn how many beer brands were made at this plant.

After finishing both tours, we were pretty hungry, so we went to a local Mexican restaurant called El Pitayo.  My mom and I split a Super Burrito and it was awesome.  After filling our bellies, we drove around wine country and stopped at the Miner Family Winery.  My parents had a wine tasting and I just enjoyed the view from the winery.

Citi Forward Converting to Citi Thank You Preferred on January 9, 2018 (Conversion Letter & Details)

Good morning everyone, happy Black Friday.  I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving with your friends and family members.  This post isn’t about Black Friday, but if you have a Citi Forward Credit Card, you might want to read this post.  Citi is sending out letters informing Citi Forward Credit Card holders that their credit card is going to be converted to a Citi Thank Your Preferred Credit Card on January 9, 2018.  Most people do not have Citi Forward Credit Cards (Citi has not allowed applications for several years), but it used to be an awesome credit card… 5x Citi Thank You Points (TYPs) for Amazon, entertainment and restaurant purchases, but back in June 2016, Citi changed the 5x TYP categories to 2x TYP categories and the credit card became worth much less than before.  The best feature of the current version of the Citi Forward Credit Card is that you get 100 TYPs when you pay your credit card bill.  That bonus is ending, but the 2x TYP categories are staying about the same.
