My Thoughts on Bucket Lists and Travel Wish Lists (Miles to Memories Response)

Good morning everyone, this post is in response to Shawn’s @ Miles to Memories post from yesterday.  I recommend you read that post before reading my response.  I think Shawn and I have very similar thoughts on the topic, namely, travel now when you are young/healthy, rather than waiting until retirement when you have “lots of money and time to travel.”  I’m not a fan of the term bucket list either, since the goal is to cross off everything on your list before you pass away.  Rather than doing things and going places to cross off bucket list items, I subscribe to the notion of creating a travel wish list in my head.  The more often you travel, the longer your travel wish list becomes.  Here are my top 5 travel wish list items:

  • Australia / New Zealand (road trip around both countries)
  • Canada (road trip from coast to coast)
  • Machu Picchu (going there next April)
  • All of Asia (might take me a while to complete this item)
  • Egypt (Great Pyramids and Sphinx of Giza)
  • and a hundred other places…

Uber to the Rescue after taking Wrong Airport Shuttle; TravelCon Las Vegas Details Announced

Good morning everyone.  I am writing to you from beautiful Embassy Suites San Francisco Airport South San Francisco, which is not to be confused with Embassy Suites San Francisco Airport Waterfront (which is located South of San Francisco Airport).  This here lies the problem, or rather, the problem that I ran into last night as I attempted to take the correct airport shuttle to the correct Embassy Suites hotel.  As you can probably guess, I got on the wrong airport shuttle.  Instead of taking the airport shuttle back to the airport, waiting for the correct airport shuttle to arrive, and then drive to the other Embassy Suites, I decided to request an UberX ride from one Embassy Suites to the other Embassy Suites.

SF Travel Hackers Meetup (Sept 10) and Inaugural Denver/Boulder Travel Hackers Meetup (Sept 12)

Happy Labor Day everyone!  Greetings from the uncrowded Las Vegas Centurion lounge.  I have 2 exciting new meetups to share.  The first is the official SF Travel Hackers Meetup group.  This month’s discuss will center on “a range of more beginner topics – with the aim of getting you to jump in and make your first booking, now that you have a lot of frequent flyer miles. Our speaker will cover how to choose a destination, and how to use a variety of programs to make a great trip. The focus is putting your miles into action!  We’ll also be talking about staying fit abroad and how to manage jet lag and dehydration on your journey.”

  • Where: San Francisco, California (Meetup Event)
  • When: Thursday, September 10 @ 6PM

American Express Membership Reward Point Transfers to Best Western Ending December 31, 2015

Good evening everyone, I hope your Labor Day Weekend is going great.  Here is a quick post from the Holiday Inn Express in Springdale, Utah, home to Zion National Park (trip report coming soon as soon as my blisters heal).  On my recent American Express Platinum Charge Card statement, I noticed a few new announcements/changes.  The first change is that American Express Membership Reward Points will no longer be transferable to Best Western starting January 1, 2016.  Granted that Best Western is not a very good transfer option, this is still another devaluation (if ever so slightly) to the American Express Membership Reward Points program.  A few months ago, I discovered that American Express Changes: 250 Membership Reward Points = 200 British Airways / Iberia Avios starting on October 1, 2015.
