$150 Discount Code from Alaska Airlines for a 5 Hour Flight Delay from Hawaii

Good morning everyone, happy Friday!  2 weekends ago, I was flying back home from Hawaii on Alaska Airlines.  Everything was going well until we got to Maui airport.  We were supposed to depart from Maui (OGG) at 4:15pm and land in Oakland (OAK) at 12:14am.  Unfortunately, our flight departed 5 hours later than planned.  Our inbound aircraft was coming from San Diego (SAN) and was supposed to depart San Diego at 7am.  But due to mechanical issues, that flight departed 10 hours later at 5pm (I feel bad for people on that flight who were stuck at the airport for 10+ hours).  The late inbound flight caused our flight to be delayed by 5 hours.  I was tracking both Alaska Airlines flights and here were the last flight emails I received for each flight.

40% Bonus when you Buy Alaska Airlines Miles (Expires April 9)

We all have our favorite airlines and miles programs. Maybe I’m biased because I usually start my travels from the West Coast, but I’m a big fan of Alaska Airlines and can never have too many Alaska miles. If your Alaska miles account is short on miles, Alaska has a 40% offer on purchased miles expiring on April 9. This brings the cost to 2.1 cents per mile. Alaska miles have great value for me. Why? I like that Alaska isn’t a part of an airline alliance, but rather that they have a long list of airline partners that offer incredible business and first class products. My two favorite Alaska Airlines partners are Cathay Pacific and Japan Airlines. I recently flew Cathay Pacific Business Class to Asia. My first time flying Cathay Pacific was back in 2012, and even after all these years and having flown many different airlines, I’m still a huge Cathay Pacific fan. I have a Japan Airlines flight booked using Alaska miles, so I’m really looking forward to experiencing their current product.

Be Nice to Alaska Airlines Phone Rep; Get 1,000 Free Miles

Good morning everyone, happy Easter!  I hope you are celebrating the holiday with friends, family members, and good food.  Last week, I called Alaska Airlines for help with an award booking.  The agent was relatively new to booking awards, but she was very nice and fun to talk to.  After finishing the award booking, I thanked her for her help.  Before we hung up, she wanted to thank me for being so polite and understanding with her while she booked the award ticket.  She then said something along the lines of, “Everyday, each Alaska Airlines rep has the ability to give 1,000 free Alaska Airlines miles to one of our members who has been a pleasure to work with.”  That was awesome, I told her I would gladly accept the 1,000 free Alaska Airlines miles.  2-3 days later, the miles were in my account.

My Virgin America / Hawaiian Airlines Award Ticket Disaster

Good morning everyone.  Last week, I wrote this post: PSA: Check Existing Reservations for “Silent” Schedule Changes.  In that post, I talked about checking existing reservations to confirm flight times.  Sometimes, airlines make schedule changes, sometimes airlines will email you to tell you about the schedule changes, and sometimes airlines silently make schedule changes and do not inform passengers.  I, unfortunately, found myself in the last category recently with an intra island Hawaiian Airlines flight.

My girlfriend and I had a flight that was originally scheduled to depart at 1:03pm, but the new flight time was 2:41pm.  If we had booked a paid ticket, we could have easily called Hawaiian Airlines, explained that we needed to be on an earlier flight, and switched to the 12:31pm flight.  Unfortunately, I booked the flight with 3,000 Virgin America miles + $5.60 in taxes/fees per person.  But the really unfortunate thing is that since Alaska Airlines and Virgin America merged, Virgin America and Hawaiian Airlines are no longer partners, so they cannot book new award flights or modify existing reservation.

Long story short, Virgin America is no longer a partner of Hawaiian Airlines, so they cannot modify an existing Hawaiian Airlines reservation.  Likewise, since the tickets were booked through Virgin America, Hawaiian Airlines was not able to make any changes to the reservation.  I would call one airline, explain the situation, and they would tell me to call the other airline.  I bounced back an forth a few times, growing more and more frustrated.  I ended up spending 3-4 hours on the phone with various agents from Hawaiian Airlines, Virgin America, and Alaska Airlines before I finally received a refund of my miles.  In this post, I will share the information I learned and the steps I took to fix this situation.

Case Study: My Trip to Australia with Miles

My boyfriend and I wanted to book a trip to Australia this year because we have a friend who is living there for work. We are somewhat flexible in our travel dates, but knew that we needed to visit in November and/or December due to other commitments, but also that we wanted to be home with our families for Christmas. Here’s how I went about planning our trip to Australia and what it is costing us for our flights.

As I already mentioned, we are pretty flexible with our dates (we both work online, so that helps). Our main two constraints are a friend’s wedding in New York at the end of October and Christmas. Since we have flexibility from working online, we wanted to travel as much of November and December as possible and spend a good chunk of that time in Australia.
