One Way Flights Can Be Priced Wildly Differently, Depending on the Direction

There is always something to learn in this miles and points game! Always. Recently I discovered something when booking an award ticket that you may already know. But if you don’t, maybe you’ll learn something new from my sharing what I discovered.

I was booking a trip to Asia but only had enough miles to book an award for either the outbound or the inbound. In deciding which direction to use miles and which direction to pay cash, I started looking at cash prices. I looked at Japan Airlines website for their prices. I searched starting from the states and saw the oneway ticket priced around $650 for an economy seat. I assumed that this was half of the roundtrip cost. This led me to assume the fare from Japan to the States, should I opt to use the inbound as my cash outlay, would be the same $650. Wow, was I wrong!

Buy United Miles with 70% Bonus (Ends May 2)

My friend Rich is a long-time United flyer. He does monthly commutes from Hawaii to California so he can never have enough United miles. When I saw this sale I let him know about it, and then I took a look at it for myself. I don’t fly United metal very often, though last year I did have a great trip home from Europe in First Class in their now retired plane. I do book a lot of flights through United using Star Alliance partners, though. I’m partial to Star Alliance airlines when I go to Europe or Asia. Continue reading

A Million Thanks to Million Mile Secrets

Back in 2013, Daraius posted an interview on Million Mile Secrets with a new-on-the-scene young blogger. Having read the interview again, so much about Grant’s enthusiasm is still going strong, even though he now has “a real job and doesn’t travel as much”. But this post isn’t about Grant. It’s about expressing our appreciation to Daraius for all he has given to the points/miles community and wishing him well as his journey continues.

Grant met Daraius many times at Frequent Traveler University (FTU) and Chicago Seminars. I’ve never met Daraius in person……yet. However, in early 2012 I did start an email friendship with him when he answered a question I had about British Airways Avios. Then in 2013 I actually wrote a blog post for MMS, and I said to him, “I can’t believe you do this everyday. Wow, it’s hard!” It amuses me that fast forward five years later, and yes, I do this everyday :)

Alaska Airlines Shopping Portal Just Got Better!

Deals, sales, extra miles…….all music to our ears, right? Many of the airlines give us the opportunity to earn miles when we shop through their portals. Alaska Airlines has the Alaska Mileage Plan and they just added a new feature which I think makes it much easier for us shoppers. Just in case you’re not familiar with shopping through an airline portal, here’s how it works so you can earn miles. In Alaska’s case, you would search, shop, and then earn miles. By visiting the Mileage Plan page and logging in, you’re directed to all the possible store options and deals. You’d click on your desired store and you’ll be taken to their website. Shop as you normally would. Once you make a qualifying purchase, Alaska will credit the miles earned to your account and send you an email to confirm, usually within five days.
