Work from Home Diary 8: My First Quarantine Haircut

Good morning everyone, I hope you all had a great Easter weekend.  I started sharing my thoughts regarding working from home in a series of Work from Home Diary posts.  Feel free to share your work from home feelings in the comments section below.  For today’s update, I wanted to share my experience getting a (quarantine) haircut at home.  I included many photos below.

This is the start of week 6 of working from home for me and week 5 for Laura.  We have converted our dining room table into a (sometimes messy) coworking space and I am proudly drinking from my favorite mug.  If you can’t see what it says, it say “I don’t need Google, my wife knows everything.”  I haven’t decided if it is ironic or accurate, but it is a great mug (and was on sale).  When we are not working from home, we like to go on a short walk around the neighborhood to stretch our legs, get some fresh air, and maybe see a few birds by the lake.

If you want to see my before and after haircut pics, please keep reading.

Work from Home Diary 7: Adult Easter Egg Hunts & Seeing My Family on Zoom this Easter Weekend

Good Friday everyone.  I started sharing my thoughts regarding working from home in a series of Work from Home Diary posts.  Feel free to share your work from home feelings in the comments section below.  For today’s update, I wanted to wish everyone a very happy Easter weekend.  I know that many churches around the country are closed and many family gatherings were cancelled, but we can still celebrate Easter individually but still be connected to others.  It is important to reach out to your friends and family members and check in on them, tell them you love them and are thinking of them, and reminisce about happier times.

One of my fondest Easter moments was from a few years ago when I was at my parent’s house.  Since all the kids have grown up, we did an adult Easter Egg Hunt.  The brightly colored plastic eggs were filled with mini alcohol bottles (the kind you would buy on flights), chocolate eggs, big chocolate bunnies, and some cash.  The real adults (our parents) hid the eggs all over the backyard and they made it very difficult to find all the eggs.  After 20 minutes of looking, all the brightly colored plastic eggs were found and we opened them up.  We compared hauls to see who got the most eggs and who got the best prizes.  It was a lot of fun and hopefully we can do it again in the years to come.

Costco Gift Cards Trigger Discover It Credit Card Q2 5% Cash Back Bonus Categories

Good afternoon everyone, I hope you had a great weekend.  We are now in Q2 so you can start earning cash back at new bonus categories with your Discover It Credit Card.  For Q2 (April 1 – June 30), you can earn 5% cash back at Gas Stations, Uber, Lyft, and at Wholesale Clubs.  I have 2 Discover It cards (since I converted my Discover It Miles to another Discover It), so I can earn 2 x $1,500 = $3,000 x 5% = $150 cash back total if I max out both cards this quarter.  Laura and I are members of Costco, so we decided to buy a $500 Costco gift card through the Costco website (only Visa credit cards are accepted in store).  We will use the gift card at Costco and at Costco gas stations for the next few weeks.  I am happy to report that the gift card purchase earned 5% cash back.

Work from Home Diary 5: Quarantine Buddy, Work Space & Daily Routine

Good afternoon everyone.  I started sharing my thoughts regarding working from home in a series of Work from Home Diary posts.  Feel free to share your work from home feelings in the comments section below.  For today’s update, I wanted to talk about my quarantine buddy (Laura), our combined work space, and our daily routine.

I’m on week 4 of working from home, so I seem to have a good system in place.  For the last few weeks, Laura has also been working from home.  When I was home by myself, I preferred working upstairs in our guest room / home office.  But now that Laura is home too, I decided to move down to the dining room table to work next to her.  It is nice to work face to face with someone (even though we are working on completely different things) and I think it keeps us both accountable.  I make sure she doesn’t spend all day on Facebook, Instagram or online shopping; she makes sure I don’t spend all day watching CNN (aka Coronavirus News Network) and reading travel blogs.

Redeem IHG, Hawaiian & Frontier Miles for Gift Cards with Points.com (Including Amazon, Walmart & More)

Good morning everyone, I hope your weekend is going well.  A few days ago, I read that Best Western suspends use of points toward gift cards or merchandise and that Southwest Rapid Rewards Can Not Be Redeemed For Gift Cards Due To Covid-19.  I did some digging and found out that it is possible to redeem IHG Rewards Club Points, Hawaiian Airlines Miles, and Frontier Airlines Miles for gift cards (both physical and electronic) with Points.com.  In this post, I will show you how to redeem points from those 3 programs into gift cards and calculate the value from these redemptions (spoiler: the redemptions are not very good).  Here is the complete list of gift card options available as of today (I combined the list into 1 big image).
